1 One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority. And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He replied, “You know the saying, ‘Red sky at night means fair weather tomorrow; He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’
3 red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.’ You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the signs of the times! 4 Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah.” Then Jesus left them and went away. 7 At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread. And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”
8 Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “You have so little faith! Why are you arguing with each other about having no bread? But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?
9 Don’t you understand even yet? Don’t you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up? Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
10 Or the 4,000 I fed with seven loaves, and the large baskets of leftovers you picked up? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
11 Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread? So again I say, ‘Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’” How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
12 Then at last they understood that he wasn’t speaking about the yeast in bread, but about the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
19 And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
20 Then he sternly warned the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
21 From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead. From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
22 But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. “Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!” And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! 23 Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.
26 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
27 For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their deeds. For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
28 And I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.” Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
