1 AND the Pharisees and Sadducees came up to him to tempt him; and they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.
2 But he answered and said to them, When it is evening, you say, It is clear, for the sky is red. He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’
3 And in the morning you say, It is a winter day, for the sky is red and cloudy. O hypocrites, you know how to judge the face of the sky, but the signs of the present time you are not able to distinguish. And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
4 A wicked and adulterous generation wants a sign; and no sign shall be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah. And he left them and went away. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed. 5 When his disciples came to the crossing place, they had forgotten to take bread with them. When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread.
6 He said to them, Look out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
7 And they were reasoning among themselves and saying, It is because we have not brought bread. And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”
8 But Jesus knew it and said to them, What are you thinking among yourselves, O you of little faith; is it because you have not brought bread? But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?
9 Do you not yet understand? Do you not remember the five loaves of bread of the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up? Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
10 Neither the seven loaves of bread of the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
11 How is it that you did not understand that I was not talking to you about the bread, but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
12 Then they understood, that he did not say that they should beware of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13 When Jesus came to the country of Caesarea of Philippi, he asked his disciples saying, What do the men say concerning me, that I am merely a son of man? Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They said, There are some who say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah, or one of the prophets: And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 He said to them, Who do you say that I am? He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus answered and said to him, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for flesh and blood did not reveal it to you, but my Father in heaven. And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
18 I tell you also that you are a stone, and upon this stone I will build my church; and the doors of Sheol shall not shut in on it. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth shall be released in heaven. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
20 Then he charged his disciples not to tell any man that he is the Christ. Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
21 From that time Jesus began to make known to his disciples, that he will shortly have to go to Jerusalem, and suffer a great deal from the elders, and the high priests and scribes, and be killed, and rise up on the third day. From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
22 So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, and he said, Far be it from you, my Lord, that this should happen to you. 23 But he turned, and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan, you are a stumbling-block to me; for you are not thinking of the things of God, but of men. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, He who wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
25 For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake shall find it. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.
26 For how will a man be benefited, if he should gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
27 For the Son of man will come in the glory of his Father with his holy angels; and then he will reward each man according to his works. For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
28 Truly I say to you, There are men who stand here, who will not taste death, until they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
