1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus. So they asked him to show them a miraculous sign from heaven. 3 And in the morning you say that there will be a storm today because the sky is red and overcast. You can forecast the weather by judging the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 |Evil and unfaithful people look for a miraculous sign. But the only sign they will be given is that of Jonah.| Then he left them standing there and went away. 7 The disciples had been discussing among themselves that they had not taken any bread along. And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”
8 Jesus knew about their conversation and asked, |Why are you discussing among yourselves that you don't have any bread? You have so little faith! But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?
9 Don't you understand yet? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand and how many baskets you filled? Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
10 Don't you remember the seven loaves for the four thousand and how many large baskets you filled? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
11 Why don't you understand that I wasn't talking to you about bread? Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!| How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? 17 Jesus replied, |Simon, son of Jonah, you are blessed! No human revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven revealed it to you. And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
18 You are Peter, and I can guarantee that on this rock I will build my church. And the gates of hell will not overpower it. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you imprison, God will imprison. And whatever you set free, God will set free.| I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
20 Then he strictly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
21 From that time on Jesus began to inform his disciples that he had to go to Jerusalem. There he would have to suffer a lot because of the leaders, chief priests, and scribes. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be brought back to life. 22 Peter took him aside and objected to this. He said, |Heaven forbid, Lord! This must never happen to you!| And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! 23 But Jesus turned and said to Peter, |Get out of my way, Satan! You are tempting me to sin. You aren't thinking the way God thinks but the way humans think.| But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, |Those who want to come with me must say no to the things they want, pick up their crosses, and follow me. Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
25 Those who want to save their lives will lose them. But those who lose their lives for me will find them. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.
26 What good will it do for people to win the whole world and lose their lives? Or what will a person give in exchange for life? For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
27 The Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father's glory. Then he will pay back each person based on what that person has done. For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
28 I can guarantee this truth: Some people who are standing here will not die until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.| Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
