1 And the Pharisees and Sadducees having come to Him, tempting Him, asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.
2 And He responding said to them, It being evening, you say, It will be fair weather: because the sky is red: He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’
3 and in the morning, It will be stormy to-day: for the lowering sky is red: ye hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the sky: but are you not able to discern the signs of the times? And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign. And no sign shall be given it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah. And leaving them, He departed. 6 And Jesus said to them; See and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
7 And they were reasoning among themselves, saying, That it is because we did not take bread. And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”
8 And Jesus knowing said to them, Why do you reason among yourselves, O ye of little faith, because you did not take bread? But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?
9 Do you not yet understand? do you not remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
10 Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
11 How do you not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread, to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees. How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
12 Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of the (bread) of the Pharisees and Sadducees, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13 And Jesus having come into the regions of Caesarea Philippi, asked His disciples, saying, Whom do the people say that I, the Son of man, am? Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 And they said, Some, John the Baptist; and some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. 15 And He says to them, But whom do you say that I am? He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 And Simon Peter responding said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 And Jesus responding said to him, Blessed art thou, Simon the son of Jonah: because flesh and blood did not reveal it to thee, but my Father who is in the heavens. And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
18 And I say to thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock will I build my Church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of the heavens: and whatsoever you may bind on the earth, shall be bound in the heavens; and whatsoever you may loose on earth shall be loosed in the heavens. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
20 Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He is the Christ. Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
21 And from this time Jesus began to show to His disciples, that it behooves Him to go away to Jerusalem, and to suffer many things from the elders and the chief priest and the scribes, and to be killed, and rise the third day. From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
22 And Peter taking Him to him, began to rebuke Him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord; because this shall not be unto thee. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”
23 And turning He said to Peter, Get behind me, adversary: thou art my stumbling-block; because thou art not thinking about the things of God, but those of men. But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, If any one wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
25 For whosoever may wish to save his soul shall lose it: and whosoever may lose his soul for my sake shall find it. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.
26 For what is a man profited, if he may gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
27 For the Son of man is about to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will give to each one according to his works. For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
28 Truly I say unto you, There are some of those standing here, who may not taste of death, until they may see the Son of man coming in His kingdom. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
