1 Then came to Jesus from Jerusalem the scribes and Pharisees, saying, Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,
2 Wherefore do thy disciples pass by the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”
3 And he, having answered, said to them, Wherefore do ye also pass by the command of God by your tradition. He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?
4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, he calumniating father or mother, in death let him die. For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’
5 And ye say, Whoever should say to father or mother, A gift, whatever thou shouldest be profited by me; But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’
6 And should not honour his father or his mother. And ye have annulled the command of God by your tradition. he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
7 Hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8 This people draw near me with their mouth, and honour me with their lips; but their heart keeps off far from me. “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; “’These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
9 But they worship me in vain, teaching doctrines the commands of men. in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’”
10 And having called the crowd, he said to them, Hear ye, and understand. And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand.
11 Not that coming into the mouth pollutes the man; but that going forth out of the mouth, this pollutes the man. it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”
12 Then his disciples having come near, said to him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees, having heard the word, were scandalized? Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”
13 And having answered, he said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father has not planted, shall be rooted up. He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.
14 Let them go: they are blind guides of the blind. And if the blind guide the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
15 And Peter, having answered, said to him, Explain to us this parable. But Peter said to him, “Explain the parable to us.” Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”
16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet destitute of understanding? And he said, “Are you also still without understanding? “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them.
17 Do ye not yet understand, that everything going into the mouth proceeds to the belly, and is cast out in the privy? Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body?
18 But the things going forth out of the mouth come from the heart, and these pollute the man. But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.
19 For from the heart come forth evil reflections, slaughters, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, defamations: For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.
20 These are the things polluting a man: but to eat with unwashed hands pollutes not a man. These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.” These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”
21 And Jesus, having gone forth from thence, withdrew into the parts of Tyre and Sidon. And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
22 And, behold, a woman, a Canaanite, having come forth from those boundaries, cried out to him, saying, Pity me, Lord, son of David; my daughter is badly possessed with an evil spirit. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”
23 And he answered her not a word. And his disciples, having come, asked him, saying, Loose her; for she cries out after us. But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”
24 And he, having answered, said, I was not sent except to the sheep having been lost, of the house of Israel. He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”
25 And she, having come, worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
26 And he, having answered, said, It is not good to take the children's bread, and cast it to the little dogs. And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
27 And she said, Yes, Lord; for the little dogs also eat from the crumbs falling from the table of their lord. She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
28 Then Jesus, having answered, said to her, O woman, great thy faith: let it be to thee as thou wilt. And her daughter was healed from that hour. Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.
29 And having passed from thence, Jesus came to the sea of Galilee; and having gone up into a mountain, he sat there. Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And he went up on the mountain and sat down there. Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down.
30 And many crowds came to him, having with them the lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and they cast them at the feet of Jesus; and he cured them: And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.
31 So that the crowds wondered, seeing the dumb speaking, the maimed sound, the lame walking, and the blind seeing: and they praised the God of Israel. so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. 32 And Jesus having called his disciples, said, I feel compassion for the crowd, for already they remain with me three days, and they have nothing they could eat: and I will not leave them fasting, lest they be relaxed in the way. Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”
33 And his disciples say to him, Whence to us, in a lonely place, so many loaves, to satisfy such a crowd? And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”
34 And he says to them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes. And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
35 And he encouraged the crowd to recline upon the earth. And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, He told the crowd to sit down on the ground.
36 And having taken the seven loaves and the fishes, having returned thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the crowd. he took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people.
37 And all ate, and were satisfied: and they took up that remaining of the fragments seven wicker baskets full. And they all ate and were satisfied. 39 And having loosed the crowds, he went into a ship, and came into the bounds of Magdala. And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan. After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.
