1 At that time did Herod the tetrarch hear the fame of Jesus, At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus, At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
2 and said to his servants, 'This is John the Baptist, he did rise from the dead, and because of this the mighty energies are working in him.' and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
3 For Herod having laid hold on John, did bind him, and did put him in prison, because of Herodias his brother Philip's wife, For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
4 for John was saying to him, 'It is not lawful to thee to have her,' because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
5 and, willing to kill him, he feared the multitude, because as a prophet they were holding him. And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.
6 But the birthday of Herod being kept, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and did please Herod, But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much
7 whereupon with an oath he professed to give her whatever she might ask. so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
8 And she having been instigated by her mother -- 'Give me (says she) here upon a plate the head of John the Baptist; Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
9 and the king was grieved, but because of the oaths and of those reclining with him, he commanded it to be given; And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given. The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted
10 and having sent, he beheaded John in the prison, He sent and had John beheaded in the prison, and had John beheaded in the prison.
11 and his head was brought upon a plate, and was given to the damsel, and she brought it nigh to her mother. and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.
12 And his disciples having come, took up the body, and buried it, and having come, they told Jesus, And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus. John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
13 and Jesus having heard, withdrew thence in a boat to a desolate place by himself, and the multitudes having heard did follow him on land from the cities. Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
14 And Jesus having come forth, saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion upon them, and did heal their infirm; When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15 and evening having come, his disciples came to him, saying, 'The place is desolate, and the hour hath now past, let away the multitudes that, having gone to the villages, they may buy to themselves food.' Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
16 And Jesus said to them, 'They have no need to go away -- give ye them to eat.' But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 And they say to him, 'We have not here except five loaves, and two fishes.' They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18 And he said, 'Bring ye them to me hither.' And he said, “Bring them here to me.” “Bring them here to me,” he said.
19 And having commanded the multitudes to recline upon the grass, and having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up to the heaven, he did bless, and having broken, he gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes, Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
20 and they did all eat, and were filled, and they took up what was over of the broken pieces twelve hand-baskets full; And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
21 and those eating were about five thousand men, apart from women and children. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22 And immediately Jesus constrained his disciples to go into the boat, and to go before him to the other side, till he might let away the multitudes; Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
23 and having let away the multitudes, he went up to the mountain by himself to pray, and evening having come, he was there alone, And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone,
24 and the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went away to them, walking upon the sea, And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
26 and the disciples having seen him walking upon the sea, were troubled saying -- 'It is an apparition,' and from the fear they cried out; But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 and immediately Jesus spake to them, saying, 'Be of good courage, I am he, be not afraid.' But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28 And Peter answering him said, 'Sir, if it is thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters;' And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 and he said, 'Come;' and having gone down from the boat, Peter walked upon the waters to come unto Jesus, He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
30 but seeing the wind vehement, he was afraid, and having begun to sink, he cried out, saying, 'Sir, save me.' But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 And immediately Jesus, having stretched forth the hand, laid hold of him, and saith to him, 'Little faith! for what didst thou waver?' Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 and they having gone to the boat the wind lulled, And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
33 and those in the boat having come, did bow to him, saying, 'Truly -- God's Son art thou.' And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
34 And having passed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret, And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
35 and having recognized him, the men of that place sent forth to all that region round about, and they brought to him all who were ill, And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and brought to him all who were sick And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him
36 and were calling on him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment, and as many as did touch were saved. and implored him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well. and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
