1 When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about Jesus, At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus, At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
2 he said to his advisers, “This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead! That is why he can do such miracles.” and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
3 For Herod had arrested and imprisoned John as a favor to his wife Herodias (the former wife of Herod’s brother Philip). For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
4 John had been telling Herod, “It is against God’s law for you to marry her.” because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of a riot, because all the people believed John was a prophet. And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. 6 But at a birthday party for Herod, Herodias’s daughter performed a dance that greatly pleased him, But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much
7 so he promised with a vow to give her anything she wanted. so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
8 At her mother’s urging, the girl said, “I want the head of John the Baptist on a tray!” Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
9 Then the king regretted what he had said; but because of the vow he had made in front of his guests, he issued the necessary orders. And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given. The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted
10 So John was beheaded in the prison, He sent and had John beheaded in the prison, and had John beheaded in the prison.

13 As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns. When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
14 Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15 That evening the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. 16 But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary—you feed them.” But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 “But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered. They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18 “Bring them here,” he said. And he said, “Bring them here to me.” “Bring them here to me,” he said.
19 Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people. Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
20 They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
21 About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children! And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. 24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
30 But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
33 Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
34 After they had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret. And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
35 When the people recognized Jesus, the news of his arrival spread quickly throughout the whole area, and soon people were bringing all their sick to be healed. And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and brought to him all who were sick And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him
36 They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed. and implored him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well. and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
