1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus, At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
2 and said to his servants, this is John the baptist, he is risen from the dead, and consequently is invested with miraculous power. and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
3 for Herod having secur'd John, bound him, and put him in prison to please Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
4 for John had said to him, it is not lawful for thee to have her. because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
5 he would have put him to death, but for fear of the people, who reckoned him a prophet. And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.
6 but when Herod's birth-day was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced in publick, and made such an impression upon Herod, But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much
7 that he promised her upon oath, to give whatever she should ask; so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
8 who being before instructed by her mother, pray, said she, order John Baptist's head to be brought here in a charger. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
9 and the king relented: nevertheless out of regard to the oath, and to those who sat with him at table, he commanded it to be brought to her. And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given. The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted
10 and pursuant to order, John was beheaded in the prison, He sent and had John beheaded in the prison, and had John beheaded in the prison.
11 whence his head was brought in a charger, and given to the young lady, who carried it to her mother. and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.
12 upon which, his disciples came to take away the body, and having buried it, they went to tell Jesus what had happened. And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus. John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
13 When Jesus heard that, he embark'd, to retire privately to a desert place: of which the people being inform'd, they followed him on foot out of the cities. Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
14 as Jesus landed, he saw a great multitude, and was touch'd with compassion towards them, and healed their sick. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15 At evening his disciples came to him, saying, this is a desert place, and dinner-time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go to buy themselves provisions in the villages. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
16 but Jesus said to them, that's needless, let them eat what you have. But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 we have nothing here, said they, but five loaves, and two fishes. They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18 bring them hither, said he. And he said, “Bring them here to me.” “Bring them here to me,” he said.
19 then giving orders for the company to sit down on the grass, he took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks; then breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave them to his disciples, and the disciples to the company: who all of them eat, Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
20 and were filled: and they carried away twelve baskets full of fragments that were left. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
21 now they that had eaten, were about five thousand men, beside women and children. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22 Presently after Jesus obliged his disciples to embark, and cross over to the other side before him, whilst he dismiss'd the people. Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
23 and when he had dismiss'd them, he retired by himself to a mountain to pray: where he stay'd all alone till the latter part of the evening. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. 24 by this time the vessel was half sea over, violently toss'd with the waves, for the wind was contrary. but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 at the dawn of day, Jesus came to them walking on the sea. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
26 the disciples seeing him walking on the sea, cry'd out in a fright, an apparition; and they scream'd for fear. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 but Jesus immediately call'd to them, take courage, said he, it is I, don't be afraid. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28 Peter answered, Lord, said he, if it be you, bid me come upon the water to you. And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 Jesus said, come, and Peter getting out of the ship, walk'd on the water to go to Jesus. He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
30 but finding the wind boisterous, he was afraid: and beginning to sink, cried out, Lord, save me. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, and caught him, diffident man, said he, why were you in suspence? Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 and when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
33 then they that were in the ship, came and worshipped him, saying, of a truth thou art the son of God. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
34 When they were over, they came into the territory of Gennesaret. And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
35 where being known by the people of that place, they sent about all that country, and presented to him all that were diseased, And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and brought to him all who were sick And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him
36 praying him to let them only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touch'd it were made perfectly whole. and implored him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well. and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
