1 AT that time Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus. At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus, At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
2 And he said to his servants, This man is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead; this is why great miracles are wrought by him. and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
3 For Herod had arrested John, and bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
4 For John had said to him, It is unlawful to have her as your wife. because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
5 So Herod wanted to kill him, but he was afraid of the people, because they accepted him as a prophet. And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.
6 When Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the guests, and it pleased Herod. But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much
7 He therefore swore to her with oaths, that he would give her anything that she asked. so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
8 And she, because she was instructed by her mother, said, Give me right here on a tray the head of John the Baptist. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
9 And the king was very sorry; but because of the oaths and the guests, he commanded that it be given to her. And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given. The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted

When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
14 And Jesus went out and saw large crowds, and he had pity for them, and healed their sick. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15 When it was evening, his disciples came to him, and they said to him, This is a lonely place, and it is getting late; dismiss the people so that the men may go to the villages and buy food for themselves. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
16 But he said to them, It is not necessary for them to go; you give them something to eat. But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 They said to him, We have nothing here, except five loaves of bread and two fish. They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18 Jesus said to them, Bring them here to me. And he said, “Bring them here to me.” “Bring them here to me,” he said.
19 And he ordered the people to sit down on the ground, and he took the five loaves of bread and the two fish, and he looked up to heaven and he blessed them, and he broke them, and gave them to his disciples, and the disciples placed them before the people. Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
20 So they all ate, and were satisfied; and they took up the fragments which were left over, twelve full baskets. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
21 And the men who ate were five thousand, not counting the women and children. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22 And immediately he urged his disciples to go up into the boat, in advance of him to the crossing place, while he dismissed the people. Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
23 And when he had dismissed the people, he went up to the mountain alone to pray; and when darkness fell he was still there alone. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone,
24 But the boat was many miles away from the land, tossed by the waves, for the wind was against it. but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the water. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
26 And his disciples saw him walking on the water, and they were scared, and they said, It is a false vision; and they cried out because of their fear. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus spoke to them at once and said, Have courage; it is I; do not be afraid. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28 And Peter answered and said to him, My Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 Jesus said to him, Come. So Peter went down from the boat, and walked on the water, to come to Jesus. He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
30 But when he saw that the wind was severe, he was afraid, and began to sink, and he raised his voice and said, My Lord, save me. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 And our Lord immediately stretched out his hand and grasped him; and he said to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt? Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they went up into the boat, the wind quieted down. And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
33 And they who were in the boat came and worshipped him; and they said, Truly you are the Son of God. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
34 And they rowed and came to the land of Gennesaret. And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
35 And the men of that country recognized him, and they sent word to all the villages around them; so they brought to him all who were seriously sick. And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and brought to him all who were sick And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him
36 And they besought him, that they might touch even the edge of his robe; and those who touched it were healed. and implored him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well. and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
