5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, having instructed them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and into a city of the Samaritans do not enter. 9 Acquire neither gold nor silver nor copper in your⁺ belts, Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts—
10 nor a bag for the way, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff; for the worker is worthy of his food. no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food. no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.
11 And into whatever city or village you⁺ may enter, inquire who is worthy in it, and remain there until you⁺ may go out. And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart. Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave.
12 And entering into the house, greet it. As you enter the house, greet it. As you enter the home, give it your greeting.
13 And if indeed the house is worthy, let your⁺ peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your⁺ peace return to you⁺. And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you.
14 And whoever may not receive you⁺ nor hear your⁺ words, going forth out of the house or that city, shake off the dust of your⁺ feet. And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.
15 Truly I say to you⁺, it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and of Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city. Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town. Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
16 Behold, I send you⁺ forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; therefore be shrewd as the serpents and innocent as the doves. “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
17 But beware of men; for they will deliver you⁺ up into the councils, and in their synagogues they will flog you⁺. Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues.
18 And you⁺ will be led before governors and also kings on account of Me, for a testimony to them and to the nations. and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.
19 And when they may deliver you⁺ up, do not be anxious how or what you⁺ shall speak; for it will be given to you⁺ in that hour what you⁺ shall speak. When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say,
20 For you⁺ are not the ones speaking, but the Spirit of your⁺ Father speaking in you⁺. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
21 And brother will deliver up brother to death, and father, child; and children will rise up against parents and will put them to death. Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.
22 And you⁺ will be hated by all because of My name; but the one having endured to the end, this one will be saved. and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
23 And when they may persecute you⁺ in one city, flee to the other. For truly I say to you⁺, you⁺ shall not have completed the cities of Israel until the Son of Man shall come. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
24 A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master. “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.
25 Aufficient to the disciple is that he may become like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If the master of the house they have called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household! It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!
26 Therefore do not fear them. For nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.
27 What I say to you⁺ in the darkness, say in the light; and what you⁺ hear in the ear, proclaim upon the housetops. What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.
28 And do not be afraid of those killing the body but not being able to kill the soul. But fear, rather, the One being able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for an assarion? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your⁺ Father. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.
30 And even the hairs of your⁺ head are all numbered. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31 Therefore do not be afraid; you⁺ are more valuable than many sparrows. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
32 Therefore everyone who will confess in Me before men, I will also confess in him before My Father who is in the heavens. So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.
33 But whoever shall deny Me before men, I also will deny him before My Father who is in the heavens. but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.
34 Do not think that I came to cast peace upon the earth; I did not come to cast peace, but a sword. “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35 For I came to set at variance: ‘A man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. For I have come to turn “’a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
36 And the enemies of the man are the members of his household.’ And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’
37 The one loving father or mother above Me is not worthy of Me, and the one loving son or daughter above Me is not worthy of Me. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39 The one having found his life will lose it, and the one having lost his life on account of Me will find it. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.
40 The one receiving you⁺ receives Me, and the one receiving Me receives the One having sent Me. “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.
41 The one receiving a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive the reward of a prophet, and the one receiving a righteous man in the name of a righteous man will receive the reward of a righteous man. The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward.
42 And whoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones merely a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, truly I say to you⁺, he shall certainly not lose his reward.” And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”
