1 When he entered again into Capernaum after some days, it was heard that he was at home. And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home.
2 Immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even around the door; and he spoke the word to them. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.
3 Four people came, carrying a paralytic to him. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.
4 When they could not come near to him for the crowd, they removed the roof where he was. When they had broken it up, they let down the mat that the paralytic was lying on. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.
5 Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.” And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
6 But there were some of the scribes sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves,
7 “Why does this man speak blasphemies like that? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
8 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you reason these things in your hearts? And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things?
9 Which is easier, to tell the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven;’ or to say, ‘Arise, and take up your bed, and walk?’ Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’?
10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man,
11 “I tell you, arise, take up your mat, and go to your house.” “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”
12 He arose, and immediately took up the mat and went out in front of them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!” He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
13 He went out again by the seaside. All the multitude came to him, and he taught them. He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them.
14 As he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he arose and followed him. And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
15 He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners sat down with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many, and they followed him. And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him.
16 The scribes and the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why is it that he eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?” And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
17 When Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
18 John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and asked him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?” Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”
19 Jesus said to them, “Can the groomsmen fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they can’t fast. And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them.
20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.
21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, or else the patch shrinks and the new tears away from the old, and a worse hole is made. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse.
22 No one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the skins, and the wine pours out, and the skins will be destroyed; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins.” And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.” And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”
23 He was going on the Sabbath day through the grain fields; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of grain. One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.
24 The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why do they do that which is not lawful on the Sabbath day?” And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
25 He said to them, “Did you never read what David did when he had need and was hungry—he, and those who were with him? And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?
26 How he entered into God’s house at the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the show bread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and gave also to those who were with him?” how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”
27 He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
28 Therefore the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.” So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.” So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
