1 Jesus, however, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was whom He had raised from the dead. 2 So they gave a dinner there in honour of Jesus, at which Martha waited at table, but Lazarus was one of the guests who were with Him. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.
3 Availing herself of the opportunity, Mary took a pound weight of pure spikenard, very costly, and poured it over His feet, and wiped His feet with her hair, so that the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4 Then said Judas (the Iscariot, one of the Twelve--the one who afterwards betrayed Jesus) But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,
5 "Why was not that perfume sold for 300 shillings and the money given to the poor?" “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.”
6 The reason he said this was not that he cared for the poor, but that he was a thief, and that being in charge of the money-box, he used to steal what was put into it. He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7 But Jesus interposed. "Do not blame her," He said, "allow her to have kept it for the time of my preparation for burial. Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.
8 For the poor you always have with you, but you have not me always." For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
9 Now it became widely known among the Jews that Jesus was there; but they came not only on His account, but also in order to see Lazarus whom He had brought back to life. When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
10 The High Priests, however, consulted together to put Lazarus also to death, So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,
11 for because of him many of the Jews left them and became believers in Jesus. because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.
12 The next day a great crowd of those who had come to the Festival, hearing that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.
13 took branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, shouting as they went, "God save him! Blessings on him who comes in the name of the Lord--even on the King of Israel!" 14 And Jesus, having procured a young ass, sat upon it, just as the Scripture says, And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
15 "Fear not, Daughter of Zion! See, thy King is coming riding on an ass's colt." “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
16 The meaning of this His disciples did not understand at the time; but after Jesus was glorified they recollected that this was written about Him, and that they had done this to Him. His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
17 The large number of people, however, who had been present when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and brought him back to life, related what they had witnessed. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.
18 This was also why the crowd came to meet Him, because they had heard of His having performed that miracle. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him.
19 The result was that the Pharisees said among themselves, "Observe how idle all your efforts are! The world is gone after him!" So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
20 Now some of those who used to come up to worship at the Festival were Greeks. Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival.
21 They came to Philip, of Bethsaida in Galilee, with the request, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.”

23 His answer was, "The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
24 In most solemn truth I tell you that unless the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains what it was--a single grain; but that if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
25 He who holds his life dear, is destroying it; and he who makes his life of no account in this world shall keep it to the Life of the Ages. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
26 If a man wishes to be my servant, let him follow me; and where I am, there too shall my servant be. If a man wishes to be my servant, the Father will honour him. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
27 Now is my soul full of trouble; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this purpose I have come to this hour. “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
28 Father, glorify Thy name." Thereupon there came a voice from the sky, "I have glorified it and will also glorify it again." Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
29 The crowd that stood by and heard it, said that there had been thunder. Others said, "An angel spoke to him." The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
30 "It is not for my sake," said Jesus, "that that voice came, but for your sakes. Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine.
31 Now is a judgement of this world: now will the Prince of this world be driven out. Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.
32 And I-- if I am lifted up from the earth--will draw all men to me." And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
33 He said this to indicate the kind of death He would die. He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
34 The crowd answered Him, "We have heard out of the Law that the Christ remains for ever. In what sense do you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is that Son of Man?" So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
35 "Yet a little while," He replied, "the light is among you. Be faithful to the light that you have, for fear darkness should overtake you; for a man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.
36 In the degree that you have light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light." Jesus said this, and went away and hid Himself from them. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.
37 But though He had performed such great miracles in their presence, they did not believe in Him-- Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.
38 in order that the words of Isaiah the Prophet might be fulfilled, "Lord, who has believed our preaching? And the arm of the Lord--to whom has it been unveiled?" so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 For this reason they were unable to believe--because Isaiah said again, Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 "He has blinded their eyes and made their minds callous, lest they should see with their eyes and perceive with their minds, and should turn, and I should heal them." “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn—and I would heal them.”
41 Isaiah uttered these words because he saw His glory; and he spoke of Him. Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.
42 Nevertheless even from among the Rulers many believed in Him. But because of the Pharisees they did not avow their belief, for fear they should be shut out from the synagogue. Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
43 For they loved the glory that comes from men rather than the glory that comes from God. for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. for they loved human praise more than praise from God.
44 But Jesus cried aloud, "He who believes in me, believes not so much in me, as in Him who sent me; And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.
45 and he who sees me sees Him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.
46 I have come like light into the world, in order that no one who believes in me may remain in the dark. I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
47 And if any one hears my teachings and regards them not, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 He who sets me at naught and does not receive my teachings is not left without a judge: the Message which I have spoken will judge him on the last day. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.
49 Because I have not spoken on my own authority; but the Father who sent me, Himself gave me a command what to say and in what words to speak. For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.
50 And I know that His command is the Life of the Ages. What therefore I speak, I speak just as the Father has bidden me." And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.” I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”
