1 Six days before Passover, Jesus arrived in Bethany. Lazarus, whom Jesus had brought back to life, lived there. Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Dinner was prepared for Jesus in Bethany. Martha served the dinner, and Lazarus was one of the people eating with Jesus. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.
3 Mary took a bottle of very expensive perfume made from pure nard and poured it on Jesus' feet. Then she dried his feet with her hair. The fragrance of the perfume filled the house. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4 One of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was going to betray him, asked, But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,
5 |Why wasn't this perfume sold for a high price and the money given to the poor?| “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.”
6 (Judas didn't say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the moneybag and carried the contributions.) He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7 Jesus said to Judas, |Leave her alone! She has done this to prepare me for the day I will be placed in a tomb. Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.
8 You will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me with you.| For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
9 A large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was in Bethany. So they went there not only to see Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom Jesus had brought back to life. When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
10 The chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too. So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,
11 Lazarus was the reason why many people were leaving the Jews and believing in Jesus. because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.
12 On the next day the large crowd that had come to the Passover festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.
13 So they took palm branches and went to meet him. They were shouting, |Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel!| So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!”
14 Jesus obtained a donkey and sat on it, as Scripture says: And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
15 |Don't be afraid, people of Zion! Your king is coming. He is riding on a donkey's colt.| “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
16 At first Jesus' disciples didn't know what these prophecies meant. However, when Jesus was glorified, the disciples remembered that these prophecies had been written about him. The disciples remembered that they had taken part in fulfilling the prophecies. His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
17 The people who had been with Jesus when he called Lazarus from the tomb and brought him back to life reported what they had seen. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.
18 Because the crowd heard that Jesus had performed this miracle, they came to meet him. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him.
19 The Pharisees said to each other, |This is getting us nowhere. Look! The whole world is following him!| So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
20 Some Greeks were among those who came to worship during the Passover festival. Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival.
21 They went to Philip (who was from Bethsaida in Galilee) and told him, |Sir, we would like to meet Jesus.| So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.”
22 Philip told Andrew, and they told Jesus. Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
23 Jesus replied to them, |The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
24 I can guarantee this truth: A single grain of wheat doesn't produce anything unless it is planted in the ground and dies. If it dies, it will produce a lot of grain. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
25 Those who love their lives will destroy them, and those who hate their lives in this world will guard them for everlasting life. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
26 Those who serve me must follow me. My servants will be with me wherever I will be. If people serve me, the Father will honor them. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
27 |I am too deeply troubled now to know how to express my feelings. Should I say, 'Father, save me from this time [of suffering]'? No! I came for this time of suffering. “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
28 Father, give glory to your name.| A voice from heaven said, |I have given it glory, and I will give it glory again.| Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
29 The crowd standing there heard the voice and said that it had thundered. Others in the crowd said that an angel had talked to him. The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
30 Jesus replied, |That voice wasn't for my benefit but for yours. Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine.
31 |This world is being judged now. The ruler of this world will be thrown out now. Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.
32 When I have been lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people toward me.| And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
33 By saying this, he indicated how he was going to die. He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
34 The crowd responded to him, |We have heard from the Scriptures that the Messiah will remain here forever. So how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up from the earth'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?| So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
35 Jesus answered the crowd, |The light will still be with you for a little while. Walk while you have light so that darkness won't defeat you. Those who walk in the dark don't know where they're going. So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.
36 While you have the light, believe in the light so that you will become people whose lives show the light.| After Jesus had said this, he was concealed as he left. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.
37 Although they had seen Jesus perform so many miracles, they wouldn't believe in him. Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.
38 In this way the words of the prophet Isaiah came true: |Lord, who has believed our message? To whom has the Lord's power been revealed?| so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 So the people couldn't believe because, as Isaiah also said, Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 |God blinded them and made them close-minded so that their eyes don't see and their minds don't understand. And they never turn to me for healing!| “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn—and I would heal them.”
41 Isaiah said this because he had seen Jesus' glory and had spoken about him. Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.
42 Many rulers believed in Jesus. However, they wouldn't admit it publicly because the Pharisees would have thrown them out of the synagogue. Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
43 They were more concerned about what people thought of them than about what God thought of them. for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. for they loved human praise more than praise from God.
44 Then Jesus said loudly, |Whoever believes in me believes not only in me but also in the one who sent me. And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.
45 Whoever sees me sees the one who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.
46 I am the light that has come into the world so that everyone who believes in me will not live in the dark. I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
47 If anyone hears my words and doesn't follow them, I don't condemn them. I didn't come to condemn the world but to save the world. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 Those who reject me by not accepting what I say have a judge appointed for them. The words that I have spoken will judge them on the last day. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.
49 I have not spoken on my own. Instead, the Father who sent me told me what I should say and how I should say it. For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.
50 I know that what he commands is eternal life. Whatever I say is what the Father told me to say.| And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.” I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”
