1 Therefore Jesus, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised out from the dead. 2 Therefore they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with Him. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.
3 Therefore Mary, having taken a litra of fragrant oil of pure nard, of great price, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4 But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, being about to betray Him, says, But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,
5 “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.”
6 But he said this not because he was caring for the poor, but because he was a thief; and having the money bag, he used to take up that being put into it. He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7 Therefore Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that for the day of My burial she may keep it. Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.
8 For you⁺ always have the poor with you, but not always do you⁺ have Me.” For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
9 Therefore the great crowd of the Jews knew that He is there; and they came, not because of Jesus only, but so that they might see Lazarus also, whom He raised out from the dead. When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
10 And the chief priests took counsel that they might kill Lazarus also, So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,
11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus. because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.
12 On the next day the great crowd, having come to the feast, having heard that Jesus is coming into Jerusalem, The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.
13 took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and they were shouting: “Hosanna!” “Blessed is the One coming in the name of the Lord!” “And the King of Israel!” So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!”
14 Now Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it, just as it is written: And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
15 “Do not fear, daughter of Zion; behold, your King comes, sitting on the colt of a donkey.” “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
16 His disciples did not know these things from the first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him and these things they did to Him. His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
17 Therefore the crowd being with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him out from the dead were testifying. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.
18 Because of this the crowd also met Him, because they heard of His having done this sign. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him.
19 Therefore the Pharisees said among themselves, “You⁺ see that you⁺ gain nothing. Behold, the world went away after Him!” So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
20 Now there were certain Greeks among those coming up so that they might worship at the feast. Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival.
21 Therefore these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and they were asking him, saying, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.” So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.”
22 Philip comes and tells Andrew; Andrew and Philip come and tell Jesus. Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
23 And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man shall be glorified. And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
24 Truly, truly, I say to you⁺, unless the grain of wheat, having fallen into the ground, should die, it remains alone; but if it should die, it bears much fruit. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
25 The one loving his life loses it, and the one hating his life in this world will keep it to eternal life. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
26 If anyone may serve Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there also My servant will be. If anyone may serve Me, the Father will honor him. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
27 Now My soul has been troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But because of this I came to this hour. “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
28 Father, glorify Your name!” Therefore a voice came from heaven: “I have both glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
29 Therefore the crowd, having stood and having heard, was saying, “There has been thunder.” Others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him.” The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
30 Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come because of Me, but because of you⁺. Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine.
31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.
32 And I, when I shall be lifted up from the earth, will draw all to Myself.” And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
33 Now He was saying this signifying by what death He was about to die. He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
34 Then the crowd answered Him, “We heard from the Law that the Christ remains to the age, and how do You say that it is necessary for the Son of Man to be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
35 Therefore Jesus said to them, “Yet a little time the Light is among you⁺. Walk while you⁺ have the Light, so that darkness might not overtake you⁺. And the one walking in the darkness does not know where he goes. So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.
36 While you⁺ have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you⁺ may become sons of light.” Jesus spoke these things, and having gone away, He was hidden from them. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.
37 But of Him having done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.
38 so that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled that said: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed?” so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 Because of this, they were not able to believe, because again Isaiah said: Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they might not see with the eyes, and understand with the heart, and turn, and I will heal them.” “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn—and I would heal them.”
41 Isaiah said these things because he saw His glory and spoke about Him. Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.
42 Nevertheless, indeed many of the rulers also believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing, so that they might not be put out of the synagogue; Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
43 for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God. for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. for they loved human praise more than praise from God.
44 And Jesus cried out and said, “The one believing in Me does not believe in Me but in the One having sent Me. And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.
45 And the one beholding Me beholds the One having sent Me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.
46 I have come into the world as a light, so that everyone believing in Me should not remain in the darkness. I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
47 And if anyone might hear My words and not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come so that I might judge the world, but so that I might save the world. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 The one rejecting Me and not receiving My words has one judging him: The word that I spoke, which will judge him in the last day. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.
49 For I did not speak from Myself, but the Father Himself, having sent Me, has given Me a commandment, what I should say and what I should speak. For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.
50 And I know that His commandment is eternal life. Therefore what I speak, just as the Father has said to Me, so I speak.” And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.” I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”
