13	a birth which they had not from circumcision, nor from the constitution of the body, nor the institution of man, but from God.	who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.	children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14	The Logos became incarnate, and had his tabernacle among us, being full of grace and truth; and we contemplated his glory, such glory as the Monogenes derived from the father.	And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.	The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. 15	it was of him that John bare witness, when he made this declaration, "this was he of whom I said, he that cometh after me, was before me; for he did indeed exist before me." 18	no man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten son, who is intimate with the father, hath made him known. 20	he own'd it, and did not deny it; but made this protestation, I am not the Christ.	He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”	He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”
21	art thou then Elias? said they; and he answer'd, I am not, art thou a prophet? and he answer'd, no.	And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”	They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22	said they to him, who then art thou? that we may give an answer to those that sent us: what sayst thou of thy self?	So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”	Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23	"I am, said he, the voice of one crying in the wilderness, clear the way of the Lord," as said the prophet Esaias.	He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”	John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”
24	Now the messengers were of the sect of the Pharisees, and they asked him,	(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)	Now the Pharisees who had been sent
25	"why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elias, nor any other prophet?"	They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”	questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26	John answered them, I baptize with water: but there is one among you, whom ye know not; he it is who coming after me,	John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know,	“I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.
27	is preferred before me, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to unloose.	even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”	He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
28	these things were transacted at Bethabara, near Jordan, where John used to baptize.	These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.	This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29	The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "behold the lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world."	The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30	this is he of whom I said, after me cometh a man, who was before me: for he did indeed exist before me.	This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’	This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’
31	I knew him not: but therefore am I come baptizing with water, that he might be manifest to Israel.	I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”	I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32	and John testified, saying, I saw the spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.	And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.	Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
33	I had not known him: but he that sent me to baptize with water, had told me, "upon whom thou shalt see the spirit descending and remaining on him, the same is he who baptizeth with the holy spirit."	I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’	And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
34	this I saw, and testify'd, that he is the son of God.	And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”	I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”
35	The next day after, John was again there with two of his disciples:	The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,	The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
36	and seeing Jesus as he walked, he said, "behold the lamb of God."	and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”	When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37	the two disciples hearing this, followed Jesus.	The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.	When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
38	then Jesus turned about, and seeing them following, said, what do you seek? they answered him, rabbi, that is to say master, where do you dwell?	Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?”	Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39	come, said he, and see, so they went and saw where he lodged, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.	He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.	“Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40	Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two disciples, who had followed Jesus, after they had heard what John had said.	One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.	Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
41	the first he met was his own brother Simon, to whom he said, "we have found the Messias," that is to say, the Christ.	He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).	The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).
42	and he brought him to Jesus, and when Jesus beheld him, he said, "thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas," which is by interpretation, a stone.	He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).	And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).
43	The day following Jesus having a mind to go into Galilee, met with Philip, and said to him, follow me.	The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”	The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”
44	now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.	Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.	Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
45	Philip meeting with Nathanael, said to him, we have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.	Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”	Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46	but Nathanael said to him, can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? come and see, said Philip.	Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”	“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
47	Jesus seeing Nathanael coming, said of him, there's a true Israelite, in whom is no guile, how do you know me?	Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”	When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
48	said Nathanael to him, before Philip called you, replied Jesus, I saw you under the fig-tree.	Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”	“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
49	Nathanael answered, rabbi, thou art the son of God, thou art the king of Israel.	Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”	Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”
50	Jesus answered him, because thou believest what I said, that I saw thee under the fig-tree, thou shalt see greater things than these.	Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”	Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”
51	and he said to him, I declare unto you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending, and descending upon the son of man.	And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”	He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”
