1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (that was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), The word came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
2 which the prophet Jeremiah spoke to all the people of Judah and to all those dwelling in Jerusalem, saying: which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: So Jeremiah the prophet said to all the people of Judah and to all those living in Jerusalem:
3 “From the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah, even to this day—this is the third and twentieth year—the word of YHWH came to me, and I have spoken to you⁺, rising early and speaking, and you⁺ have not listened. “For twenty-three years, from the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, to this day, the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken persistently to you, but you have not listened. For twenty-three years—from the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah until this very day—the word of the LORD has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again, but you have not listened.
4 And YHWH has sent to you⁺ all His servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, and you⁺ have not listened and you⁺ have not inclined your⁺ ear to hear— You have neither listened nor inclined your ears to hear, although the LORD persistently sent to you all his servants the prophets, And though the LORD has sent all his servants the prophets to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention.
5 saying, ‘Repent now, each man from his evil way, and from the evil of his deeds, and dwell in the land that YHWH has given to you⁺ and to your⁺ fathers, from forever and even to forever. saying, ‘Turn now, every one of you, from his evil way and evil deeds, and dwell upon the land that the LORD has given to you and your fathers from of old and forever. They said, “Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways and your evil practices, and you can stay in the land the LORD gave to you and your ancestors for ever and ever.
6 And do not go after other gods to serve them and to bow down to them, and do not provoke Me to anger with the works of your⁺ hands; and I will not bring evil to you⁺.’ Do not go after other gods to serve and worship them, or provoke me to anger with the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm.’ Do not follow other gods to serve and worship them; do not arouse my anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you.”
7 ‘And you⁺ have not listened to Me,’ a declaration of YHWH, ‘So you have provoked Me to anger by the works of your⁺ hands, to bring evil to yourselves. Yet you have not listened to me, declares the LORD, that you might provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm. “But you did not listen to me,” declares the LORD, “and you have aroused my anger with what your hands have made, and you have brought harm to yourselves.”
8 Therefore, thus says YHWH of Hosts: ‘Because that you have not heard My words, “Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: Because you have not obeyed my words, Therefore the LORD Almighty says this: “Because you have not listened to my words,
9 behold, I am sending forth and I have taken all the families of the north, a declaration of YHWH, and unto Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant. And will bring them against this land and against its dwellers and against all these surrounding nations, and I will devote them to destruction, and I will give them for a horror and for a hissing and for desolations forever! behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the LORD, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, and make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation. I will summon all the peoples of the north and my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,” declares the LORD, “and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy them and make them an object of horror and scorn, and an everlasting ruin.
10 And I will make perish from them the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. Moreover, I will banish from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the grinding of the millstones and the light of the lamp. I will banish from them the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom, the sound of millstones and the light of the lamp.
11 And all this land will become as a desolation, as a horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years. This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. This whole country will become a desolate wasteland, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
12 And it will come to pass, at the completing of seventy years, that I will visit punishment upon the king of Babylon, upon that nation, a declaration of YHWH, for their iniquity, and upon the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it as a desolation forever. Then after seventy years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the LORD, making the land an everlasting waste. “But when the seventy years are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon and his nation, the land of the Babylonians, for their guilt,” declares the LORD, “and will make it desolate forever.
13 And I will bring upon that land all My words that I have spoken against it, all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied concerning all the nations. I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. I will bring on that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations.
14 For shall be served by them—even them—even many nations and great kings; and I will repay to them according to their deeds and according to the works of their own hands.’” For many nations and great kings shall make slaves even of them, and I will recompense them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.” They themselves will be enslaved by many nations and great kings; I will repay them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.”
15 For thus said YHWH God of Israel to me: “Take the wine of the cup of this fury from My hand, and cause all the nations to drink it, to whom I am sending you. Thus the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.
16 And they will drink it and stagger about and go raving from the face of the sword that I am sending among them. They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of the sword that I am sending among them.” When they drink it, they will stagger and go mad because of the sword I will send among them.”
17 And I took the cup from the hand of YHWH and made all the nations drink from it to whom YHWH had sent me: So I took the cup from the LORD’s hand, and made all the nations to whom the LORD sent me drink it: So I took the cup from the LORD’s hand and made all the nations to whom he sent me drink it:
18 Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and its kings and its princes, to make them a desolation, a horror, a hissing, and a curse—as at this day; Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a desolation and a waste, a hissing and a curse, as at this day; Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin and an object of horror and scorn, a curse —as they are today;
19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people; Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, all his people, Pharaoh king of Egypt, his attendants, his officials and all his people,
20 and all the mixed multitude, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines—and Ashkelon, and Gaza, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod— and all the mixed tribes among them; all the kings of the land of Uz and all the kings of the land of the Philistines (Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod); and all the foreign people there; all the kings of Uz; all the kings of the Philistines (those of Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the people left at Ashdod);
21 Edom, and Moab, and the sons of Ammon, Edom, Moab, and the sons of Ammon; Edom, Moab and Ammon;
22 and all the kings of Tyre, and all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the islands that are across the sea, all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coastland across the sea; all the kings of Tyre and Sidon; the kings of the coastlands across the sea;
23 and Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all in the cut off corners, Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who cut the corners of their hair; Dedan, Tema, Buz and all who are in distant places;
24 and all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mixed multitude dwelling in the desert, all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the mixed tribes who dwell in the desert; all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the foreign people who live in the wilderness;
25 and all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes, all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media; all the kings of Zimri, Elam and Media;
26 and all the kings of the north, those near and those far, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the earth that are on the face of the earth, and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them. all the kings of the north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of Babylon shall drink. and all the kings of the north, near and far, one after the other—all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshak will drink it too.
27 And you shall say to them, “Thus says YHWH of Hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Drink and become drunk, and vomit, and fall, and you⁺ shall stand no more before the face of the sword that I am sending among you⁺.’ “Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Drink, be drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more, because of the sword that I am sending among you.’ “Then tell them, ‘This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword I will send among you.’
28 And it will come to pass, if they refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, that you shall say to them, thus says YHWH of Hosts: ‘You shall surely drink! “And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: You must drink! But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink, tell them, ‘This is what the LORD Almighty says: You must drink it!
29 For behold, upon the city that is called by My name, I am beginning to bring evil, and you⁺, will you⁺ at all be cleared? You⁺ will not be cleared of guilt. For I am calling for a sword upon all those dwelling in the earth! A declaration of YHWH of Hosts.’ For behold, I begin to work disaster at the city that is called by my name, and shall you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the LORD of hosts.’ See, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that bears my Name, and will you indeed go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword on all who live on the earth, declares the LORD Almighty.’
30 And you must prophesy against them all these words, and you are to say to them: ‘YHWH will roar from on high, and from His holy habitation He will give forth His voice; He will roar loudly against His habitation, a shout as of treaders He will give forth unto all those dwelling in the earth. “You, therefore, shall prophesy against them all these words, and say to them: “‘The LORD will roar from on high, and from his holy habitation utter his voice; he will roar mightily against his fold, and shout, like those who tread grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. “Now prophesy all these words against them and say to them: “’The LORD will roar from on high; he will thunder from his holy dwelling and roar mightily against his land. He will shout like those who tread the grapes, shout against all who live on the earth.
31 An uproar will come as far as the ends of the earth; for unto YHWH is a dispute with the nations, He executes judgment for all flesh, and He will give the wicked to the sword!’” A declaration of YHWH. The clamor will resound to the ends of the earth, for the LORD has an indictment against the nations; he is entering into judgment with all flesh, and the wicked he will put to the sword, declares the LORD.’ The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth, for the LORD will bring charges against the nations; he will bring judgment on all mankind and put the wicked to the sword,’” declares the LORD.
32 Thus says YHWH of Hosts: “Behold, disaster goes forth from nation to nation, and a great tempest is raised up from the sides of the earth. “Thus says the LORD of hosts: Behold, disaster is going forth from nation to nation, and a great tempest is stirring from the farthest parts of the earth! This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Look! Disaster is spreading from nation to nation; a mighty storm is rising from the ends of the earth.”
33 And those slain by YHWH shall be on that day from one end of the earth and to the other end of the earth; They will not be mourned, and not gathered, and not buried—they will be like dung upon the face of the ground! “And those pierced by the LORD on that day shall extend from one end of the earth to the other. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall be dung on the surface of the ground. At that time those slain by the LORD will be everywhere—from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned or gathered up or buried, but will be like dung lying on the ground.
34 Wail, O shepherds, and cry out; and roll, O leaders of the flock! For the days of your⁺ slaughter are fulfilled—and of your⁺ dispersions—and you⁺ will fall like a precious vessel. “Wail, you shepherds, and cry out, and roll in ashes, you lords of the flock, for the days of your slaughter and dispersion have come, and you shall fall like a choice vessel. Weep and wail, you shepherds; roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock. For your time to be slaughtered has come; you will fall like the best of the rams.
35 And the place of refuge will perish from the shepherds, and of escape from the leaders of the flock— No refuge will remain for the shepherds, nor escape for the lords of the flock. The shepherds will have nowhere to flee, the leaders of the flock no place to escape.
36 A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and the wailing of the leaders of the flock! For YHWH has spoiled their pasture. A voice—the cry of the shepherds, and the wail of the lords of the flock! For the LORD is laying waste their pasture, Hear the cry of the shepherds, the wailing of the leaders of the flock, for the LORD is destroying their pasture.
37 And the peaceable habitations are silenced before the face of the burning nose of YHWH. and the peaceful folds are devastated because of the fierce anger of the LORD. The peaceful meadows will be laid waste because of the fierce anger of the LORD.
38 He leaves His lair like the lion, for their land has become as a desolation before the face of the fierceness of the Oppressor, and from the face of the fierceness anger. Like a lion he has left his lair, for their land has become a waste because of the sword of the oppressor, and because of his fierce anger.” Like a lion he will leave his lair, and their land will become desolate because of the sword of the oppressor and because of the LORD’s fierce anger.
