1 The vision of Isaiah son of Amos which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, kings of Judah. The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
2 Hear, ye heavens, and give ear thou earth, for Jehovah spake: for I caused to grow and lifted up sons, and they rebelled against me. Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth; for the LORD has spoken: “Children have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me. Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth! For the LORD has spoken: “I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.
3 The ox knew his possessor, and the ass his lord's stall: Israel knew not; my people understood not. The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s crib, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.” The ox knows its master, the donkey its owner’s manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.”
4 Wo! sinful nation, a people heavy with sin, a seed doing evil, sons acting wickedly; they forsook Jehovah; they despised the holy one of Israel; they separated themselves backward. Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the LORD, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly estranged. Woe to the sinful nation, a people whose guilt is great, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him.
5 For what shall ye be yet struck? will ye add apostasy? every head for sickness, and every heart sick. Why will you still be struck down? Why will you continue to rebel? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted.
6 From the sole of the foot and even to the head, no wholeness in it; a wound and bruise, and a fresh blow: they were not pressed out, and they were not bound up, and they were not softened with oil. From the sole of the foot even to the head, there is no soundness in it, but bruises and sores and raw wounds; they are not pressed out or bound up or softened with oil. From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness— only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with olive oil.
7 Your land made desolate, your cities burnt with fire, your land before your strangers eating it up, and made desolate, as the overthrow of strangers. Your country lies desolate; your cities are burned with fire; in your very presence foreigners devour your land; it is desolate, as overthrown by foreigners. Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.
8 And the daughter of Zion was left as a booth in a vineyard, as a lodge in a field of cucumbers, as a city besieged. And the daughter of Zion is left like a booth in a vineyard, like a lodge in a cucumber field, like a besieged city. Daughter Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a cucumber field, like a city under siege.
9 Unless Jehovah of armies left to us an escaping so small, we were as Sodom and we were made like to Gomorrah. If the LORD of hosts had not left us a few survivors, we should have been like Sodom, and become like Gomorrah. Unless the LORD Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah.
10 Hear the word of Jehovah, ye leaders of Sodom: give ear to the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah. Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom! Give ear to the teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah! Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah!
11 For what to me the multitude of your sacrifices? Jehovah will say: I was filled with the burnt-offerings of rams and the fat of fatlings; and I delighted not in the blood of bullocks, and of he lambs and of he goats. “What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the LORD; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. “The multitude of your sacrifices— what are they to me?” says the LORD. “I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
12 When ye shall come to be seen before me who sought this from your hand to tread my enclosure. “When you come to appear before me, who has required of you this trampling of my courts? When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts?
13 Ye shall not add to bring gifts of iniquity; incense, this an abomination to me; the new moon and the Sabbath, the calling of the assembly; I shall not be able to bear vanity and restraining. Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and Sabbath and the calling of convocations— I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly. Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations— I cannot bear your worthless assemblies.
14 Your new moons and your appointments my soul hated; they were for a burden upon me; I was wearied to lift up. Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals I hate with all my being. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.
15 And in the spreading forth of your hands I will hide mine eyes from you; also when ye shall multiply prayer I hear not: your hands were full of blood. When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening. Your hands are full of blood!
16 Wash ye, cleanse yourselves: turn away evil from your doings from before mine eyes; leave off the evil; Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil, Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong.
17 Learn to do good; seek out judgment, lead right the oppressor, judge the orphan, contend for the widow. learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause. Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.
18 Come now we will confute together Jehovah will say: if your sins shall be as deep scarlet, they shall be white as snow; if they shall be red as crimson, they shall be as wool. “Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.
19 If ye shall be willing and hear, ye shall eat the good of the land. If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land;
20 And if ye shall refuse and rebel, ye shall be eaten by the sword: for the mouth of Jehovah spake. but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be eaten by the sword; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
21 How was the faithful city for a harlot! I filled with judgment; justice will lodge in her; and now they are killing. How the faithful city has become a whore, she who was full of justice! Righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers. See how the faithful city has become a prostitute! She once was full of justice; righteousness used to dwell in her— but now murderers!
22 Thy silver was for dross, thy wine adulterated with water. Your silver has become dross, your best wine mixed with water. Your silver has become dross, your choice wine is diluted with water.
23 Thy chiefs turning away, and associates of thieves: every one loving a gift and following recompenses: the orphan they will not judge, and the cause of the widow will not come to them. Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not bring justice to the fatherless, and the widow’s cause does not come to them. Your rulers are rebels, partners with thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow’s case does not come before them.
24 For this says the lord Jehovah of armies, the mighty one of Israel, Wo! I will take vengeance of mine adversaries, and I will avenge myself of mine enemies: Therefore the Lord declares, the LORD of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: “Ah, I will get relief from my enemies and avenge myself on my foes. Therefore the Lord, the LORD Almighty, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: “Ah! I will vent my wrath on my foes and avenge myself on my enemies.
25 And I will turn back my hand upon thee, end I will straiten thy dross according to pureness, and I will remove all thine alloy: I will turn my hand against you and will smelt away your dross as with lye and remove all your alloy. I will turn my hand against you; I will thoroughly purge away your dross and remove all your impurities.
26 And I will turn back thy judges as in the beginning, and thy counsellors as in the beginning: after this he shall call to thee, The city of justice, the faithful city. And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city.” I will restore your leaders as in days of old, your rulers as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City.”
27 Zion shall be ransomed with judgment and her captivity with justice. Zion shall be redeemed by justice, and those in her who repent, by righteousness. Zion will be delivered with justice, her penitent ones with righteousness.
28 Breaking the transgressing and the sinning together, and they forsaking Jehovah shall be finished. But rebels and sinners shall be broken together, and those who forsake the LORD shall be consumed. But rebels and sinners will both be broken, and those who forsake the LORD will perish.
29 For they shall be ashamed of their mighty ones which ye desired, and ye shall blush for the gardens which ye chose. For they shall be ashamed of the oaks that you desired; and you shall blush for the gardens that you have chosen. “You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen.
30 For ye shall be as an oak the leaf withering, and as a garden which there no water to it. For you shall be like an oak whose leaf withers, and like a garden without water. You will be like an oak with fading leaves, like a garden without water.
31 And the strong was for tow, and his work for a spark, and they two were burnt together, and none quenching. And the strong shall become tinder, and his work a spark, and both of them shall burn together, with none to quench them. The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire.”
