1	Then Joseph instructed his steward: “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each one’s silver in the mouth of his sack.	Then he commanded the steward of his house, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in the mouth of his sack,	And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks <i>with</i> food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth. 2	Put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” So the steward did as Joseph had instructed.	and put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, with his money for the grain.” And he did as Joseph told him.	And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.	And put my cup, the silver cup, in the opening of the sack of the youngest, and his money for the grain.” And he did as Joseph had told <i>him.</i>	Then put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did as Joseph said.
3	At daybreak, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.	As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away with their donkeys.	As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.	As soon as it was light, the men were sent away, they with their donkeys.	As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.
4	They had not gone far from the city when Joseph told his steward, “Pursue the men at once, and when you overtake them, ask, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?	They had gone only a short distance from the city. Now Joseph said to his steward, “Up, follow after the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good?	<i>And</i> when they were gone out of the city, <i>and</i> not <i>yet</i> far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?	They had <i>just</i> left the city, <i>and</i> were not far away, when Joseph said to his house steward, “Up, follow the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good?	They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, “Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?
5	Is this not the cup my master drinks from and uses for divination? What you have done is wicked!’ ”	Is it not from this that my lord drinks, and by this that he practices divination? You have done evil in doing this.’”	<i>Is</i> not this <i>it</i> in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.	Is this not <i>that</i> from which my lord drinks, and which he indeed uses for divination? You have done wrong in doing this!’”	Isn’t this the cup my master drinks from and also uses for divination? This is a wicked thing you have done.’”
6	When the steward overtook them, he relayed these words to them.	When he overtook them, he spoke to them these words.	And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.	So he overtook them and spoke these words to them.	When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them.
7	“Why does my lord say these things?” they asked. “Your servants could not possibly do such a thing.	They said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing!	And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:	And they said to him, “Why does my lord say such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing!	But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants to do anything like that!
8	We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found in the mouths of our sacks. Why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?	Behold, the money that we found in the mouths of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house?	Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold?	Behold, the money which we found in the opening of our sacks we have brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house?	We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found inside the mouths of our sacks. So why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?
9	If any of your servants is found to have it, he must die, and the rest will become slaves of my lord.”	Whichever of your servants is found with it shall die, and we also will be my lord’s servants.”	With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord's bondmen.	With whomever of your servants it is found, he shall die, and we also shall be my lord’s slaves.”	If any of your servants is found to have it, he will die; and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.”
10	“ As you say,” replied the steward. “But only the one who is found with the cup will be my slave, and the rest of you shall be free of blame.”	He said, “Let it be as you say: he who is found with it shall be my servant, and the rest of you shall be innocent.”	And he said, Now also <i>let</i> it <i>be</i> according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.	So he said, “Now let it indeed be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my slave, but <i>the rest of</i> you shall be <i>considered</i> innocent.”	“Very well, then,” he said, “let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it will become my slave; the rest of you will be free from blame.”
11	So each one quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it.	Then each man quickly lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack.	Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.	Then they hurried, each man lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack.	Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it.
12	The steward searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest— and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.	And he searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.	And he searched, <i>and</i> began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.	And he searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.	Then the steward proceeded to search, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.
13	Then they all tore their clothes, loaded their donkeys, and returned to the city.	Then they tore their clothes, and every man loaded his donkey, and they returned to the city. 14	When Judah and his brothers arrived at Joseph’s house, he was still there, and they fell to the ground before him.	When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, he was still there. They fell before him to the ground.	And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house; for he <i>was</i> yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.	When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, he was still there, and they fell down to the ground before him.	Joseph was still in the house when Judah and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him.
15	“What is this deed you have done?” Joseph declared. “Do you not know that a man like me can surely divine the truth?”	Joseph said to them, “What deed is this that you have done? Do you not know that a man like me can indeed practice divination?”	And Joseph said unto them, What deed <i>is</i> this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?	Joseph said to them, “What is this thing that you have done? Do you not know that a man who is like me can indeed practice divination?”	Joseph said to them, “What is this you have done? Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?”
16	“What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied. “How can we plead? How can we justify ourselves? God has exposed the iniquity of your servants. We are now my lord’s slaves— both we and the one who was found with the cup.”	And Judah said, “What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how can we clear ourselves? God has found out the guilt of your servants; behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we and he also in whose hand the cup has been found.”	And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we <i>are</i> my lord's servants, both we, and <i>he</i> also with whom the cup is found.	So Judah said, “What can we say to my lord? What <i>words</i> can we speak? And how can we justify ourselves? God has found out the guilt of your servants; behold, we are my lord’s slaves, both we and the one in whose possession the cup has been found.”	“What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied. “What can we say? How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants’ guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves—we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.”
17	But Joseph replied, “Far be it from me to do this. The man who was found with the cup will be my slave. The rest of you may return to your father in peace.”	But he said, “Far be it from me that I should do so! Only the man in whose hand the cup was found shall be my servant. But as for you, go up in peace to your father.”	And he said, God forbid that I should do so: <i>but</i> the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.	But he said, “Far be it from me to do this. The man in whose possession the cup has been found, he shall be my slave; but as for you, go up in peace to your father.”	But Joseph said, “Far be it from me to do such a thing! Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave. The rest of you, go back to your father in peace.”
18	Then Judah approached Joseph and said, “Sir, please let your servant speak personally to my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, for you are equal to Pharaoh himself.	Then Judah went up to him and said, “Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not your anger burn against your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself.	Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou <i>art</i> even as Pharaoh.	Then Judah approached him and said, “Oh my lord, may your servant please speak a word in my lord’s ears, and do not be angry with your servant; for you are equal to Pharaoh.	Then Judah went up to him and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord, let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself.
19	My lord asked his servants, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’	My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father, or a brother?’	My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?	My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father or a brother?’	My lord asked his servants, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’
20	And we answered, ‘We have an elderly father and a younger brother, the child of his old age. The boy’s brother is dead. He is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’	And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a young brother, the child of his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother’s children, and his father loves him.’	And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.	And we said to my lord, ‘We have an old father and a little boy <i>born in our father’s</i> old age. Now his brother is dead, so he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.’	And we answered, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’
21	Then you told your servants, ‘Bring him down to me so that I can see him for myself.’	Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’	And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.	Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me so that I may set my eyes on him.’	“Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.’
22	So we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father. If he were to leave, his father would die.’	We said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’	And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for <i>if</i> he should leave his father, <i>his father</i> would die.	But we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’	And we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.’
23	But you said to your servants, ‘ Unless your younger brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’	Then you said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not see my face again.’	And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.	You said to your servants, however, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’	But you told your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’
24	Now when we returned to your servant my father, we relayed your words to him.	“When we went back to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.	And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.	So it came about when we went up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.	When we went back to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had said.
25	Then our father said, ‘Go back and buy us some food.’	And when our father said, ‘Go again, buy us a little food,’	And our father said, Go again, <i>and</i> buy us a little food.	And our father said, ‘Go back, buy us a little food.’	“Then our father said, ‘Go back and buy a little more food.’
26	But we answered, ‘We cannot go down there unless our younger brother goes with us. So if our younger brother is not with us, we cannot see the man.’	we said, ‘We cannot go down. If our youngest brother goes with us, then we will go down. For we cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’	And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man's face, except our youngest brother <i>be</i> with us.	But we said, ‘We cannot go down. If our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’	But we said, ‘We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’
27	And your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.	Then your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.	And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two <i>sons</i>:	Then your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons;	“Your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.
28	When one of them was gone, I said: “Surely he has been torn to pieces.” And I have not seen him since.	One left me, and I said, “Surely he has been torn to pieces,” and I have never seen him since.	And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:	and the one left me, and I said, “Surely he is torn to pieces,” and I have not seen him since.	One of them went away from me, and I said, “He has surely been torn to pieces.” And I have not seen him since.
29	Now if you also take this one from me and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.’	If you take this one also from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs in evil to Sheol.’	And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.	If you also take this one from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.’	If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in misery.’
30	So if the boy is not with us when I return to your servant, and if my father, whose life is wrapped up in the boy’s life,	“Now therefore, as soon as I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us, then, as his life is bound up in the boy’s life,	Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad <i>be</i> not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life;	So now, when I come to your servant, my father, and the boy is not with us—since our father’s life is so attached to the boy’s life—	“So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life,
31	sees that the boy is not with us, he will die. Then your servants will have brought the gray hair of your servant our father down to Sheol in sorrow.	as soon as he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die, and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.	It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad <i>is</i> not <i>with us</i>, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.	when he sees that the boy is not <i>with us,</i> he will die. So your servants will bring the gray hair of your servant, our father, down to Sheol in sorrow.	sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow.
32	Indeed, your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father, saying, ‘If I do not return him to you, I will bear the guilt before you, my father, all my life.’	For your servant became a pledge of safety for the boy to my father, saying, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father all my life.’	For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.	For your servant accepted responsibility for the boy from my father, saying, ‘If I do not bring him <i>back</i> to you, then my father can let me take the blame forever.’	Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’
33	Now please let your servant stay here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy. Let him return with his brothers.	Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the boy as a servant to my lord, and let the boy go back with his brothers.	Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.	So now, please let your servant remain as a slave to my lord instead of the boy, and let the boy go up with his brothers.	“Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers.
34	For how can I go back to my father without the boy? I could not bear to see the misery that would overwhelm him.”	For how can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? I fear to see the evil that would find my father.”	For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad <i>be</i> not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.	For how shall I go up to my father if the boy is not with me? <i>I fear</i> that I may see the evil that would overtake my father.”	How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come on my father.”
