1 Now Saul was consenting to his execution. On that day, there broke out a severe persecution of the church in Jerusalem, and all were scattered throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. And Saul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. And Saul approved of their killing him. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.
2 Devout men buried Stephen and made a loud lament over him. Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him. Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him.
3 Saul, meanwhile, was trying to destroy the church; entering house after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over for imprisonment. 9 A man named Simon used to practice magic in the city and astounded the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great. But there was a man named Simon, who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody great. Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,
10 All of them, from the least to the greatest, paid attention to him, saying, “This man is the ‘Power of God’ that is called ‘Great.’” They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the power of God that is called Great.” and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.”
11 They paid attention to him because he had astounded them by his magic for a long time, And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic. They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery.
12 but once they began to believe Philip as he preached the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, men and women alike were baptized. But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Even Simon himself believed and, after being baptized, became devoted to Philip; and when he saw the signs and mighty deeds that were occurring, he was astounded. 20 But Peter said to him, “May your money perish with you, because you thought that you could buy the gift of God with money. Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!
21 You have no share or lot in this matter, for your heart is not upright before God. You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.
22 Repent of this wickedness of yours and pray to the Lord that, if possible, your intention may be forgiven. Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart.
23 For I see that you are filled with bitter gall and are in the bonds of iniquity.” For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.” For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”
24 Simon said in reply, “Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.” And Simon answered, “Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.” Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
25 So when they had testified and proclaimed the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem and preached the good news to many Samaritan villages. Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans. After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.
26 Then the angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, “Get up and head south on the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza, the desert route.” Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.”
27 So he got up and set out. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, that is, the queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury, who had come to Jerusalem to worship, And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship,
28 and was returning home. Seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet.
29 The Spirit said to Philip, “Go and join up with that chariot.” And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”
30 Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.
31 He replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” So he invited Philip to get in and sit with him. And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
32 This was the scripture passage he was reading: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opened not his mouth. Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth. This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
33 In [his] humiliation justice was denied him. Who will tell of his posterity? For his life is taken from the earth.” In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.” In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.”
34 Then the eunuch said to Philip in reply, “I beg you, about whom is the prophet saying this? About himself, or about someone else?” And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?”
35 Then Philip opened his mouth and, beginning with this scripture passage, he proclaimed Jesus to him. Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.
36 As they traveled along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look, there is water. What is to prevent my being baptized?” And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?”

38 Then he ordered the chariot to stop, and Philip and the eunuch both went down into the water, and he baptized him. And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.
39 When they came out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, but continued on his way rejoicing. And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.
40 Philip came to Azotus, and went about proclaiming the good news to all the towns until he reached Caesarea. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.
