1	BUT a certain man called An-a-ni’as, to gether with his wife named Shapphi’ra, sold his field.	But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property,	Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.
2	And he took some of the price and hid it, and his wife also knew of it, and he brought some of the money and placed it at the disposal of the apostles.	and with his wife’s knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet.	With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.
3	And Simon Peter said to him, An-a-ni’as, why has Satan so filled your heart that you should lie to the Holy Spirit and hide part of the money of the price of the field?	But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?	Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?
4	Was it not your own before you sold it? And after it was sold, had you not the sole authority over its price? What made you think to do this thing? You have not only lied to men but to God.	While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”	Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”
5	And when An-a-ni’as heard these words, he fell down and died; and great fear came upon all of those who heard these things.	When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it.	When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.
6	The younger men among them arose, and moved his body aside. Then they took him out and buried him.	The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him.	Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.
7	Three hours later his wife also came in, not knowing what had happened.	After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.	About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8	Simon Peter said to her, Tell me if you sold the field for this price? She said, Yea, for this price.	And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.”	Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?” “Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”
9	Then Simon Peter said to her, Because you have been partners to tempt the Spirit of the LORD, behold the feet of the men who have buried your husband are at the door, and they shall carry you out also.	But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”	Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”
10	And in that very hour she fell down at their feet and died, and the young men came in and found her dead, and they picked her up and carried her away and buried her by the side of her husband.	Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.	At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
11	And great fear came upon all the congregation and upon all who heard what had happened.	And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.	Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.
12	Many miracles and signs were wrought among the people by the apostles, and they were all gathered together in the portico of Solomon.	Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico.	The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade.
13	And of the unbelievers, no one dared to interfere with them, but the people held them in respect.	None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem.	No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.
14	And the number of those who believed in the LORD was greatly increased by multitudes, both of men and women.	And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,	Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.
15	They even brought out the sick into the streets and laid them on bed quilts so that when Simon Peter should happen to pass by, his shadow might fall upon them.	so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them.	As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.
16	Many came to them from other cities around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and mentally afflicted, and they were all healed.	The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.	Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.
17	Then the high priest was filled with jealousy and all of those who were with him, for they were adherents to the teachings of the Sad’du-cees,	But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy	Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.
18	So they laid hold on the apostles and arrested them and bound them in prison.	they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison.	They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.
19	But during the night, the angel of the LORD opened the door of the prison and brought them forth and said to them,	But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said,	But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out.
20	Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all these words of life.	“Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.”	“Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.”
21	Accordingly they went out early in morning and entered into the temple and taught the people. But the high priest and those who were with him called their associates and the elders of Israel, and sent to the prison to bring the apostles.	And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach. Now when the high priest came, and those who were with him, they called together the council, all the senate of the people of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.	At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people. When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles.
22	And when those who were sent by them, went, and did not find them in the prison, they returned,	But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported,	But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they went back and reported,
23	Saying, We found the prison carefully locked and also the guards standing at the doors; and we opened them but found no man there.	“We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them we found no one inside.”	“We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.”
24	When the high priest and the leaders of the temple heard these words, they were astonished at them and they were reasoning how it could happen,	Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to.	On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.
25	When a man came and informed them, Behold! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.	And someone came and told them, “Look! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.”	Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.”
26	Then the leaders went with the soldiers to bring them, not by force, for they were afraid that the people might stone them.	Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.	At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them.
27	And when they had brought them, they made them stand before the whole council, and the high priest proceeded,	And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them,	The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest.
28	Saying, Did we not strictly command you not to teach any man in this name? And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine; and intend to bring the blood of this man upon us.	saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.”	“We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”
29	Then Simon Peter with the rest of the apostles answered and said to them, We must obey God rather than men.	But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.	Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!
30	The God of our fathers has raised up Jesus whom you murdered when you crucified him on the cross.	The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree.	The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross.
31	This very one God has appointed a Prince and a Saviour, and has lifted him up by his right hand so that he may grant repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.	God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.	God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins.
32	And we are the witnesses of these words; so is also the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who believe in him.	And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”	We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
33	When they heard these words, they were enraged and thought to murder the apostles.	When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.	When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death.
34	Then one of the Phar’i-sees whose name was Ga-ma’li-el, a teacher of the law and honored by all the people, rose up and ordered them to take the apostles outside for a little while;	But a Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while.	But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while.
35	Then he said to them, Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves, and find out what is the best for you to do about these men.	And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men.	Then he addressed the Sanhedrin: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men.
36	For before these days, rose up Theu’das, boasting himself to be a great man; and about four hundred men followed him: he was slain; and those who followed him were scattered and nothing came of them.	For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.	Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing.
37	After him rose up Judas, the Gal-i-le’an, in the days when people were registering for the head tax, and he misled many people into following him. He died; and all of those who followed him were dispersed.	After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered.	After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered.
38	So now I tell you, Keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this thought and this work is of men, it will fail and pass away.	So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail;	Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.
39	But if it be of God, you cannot suppress it, lest perchance you find yourself standing in opposition to God.	but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice,	But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”
40	And they listened to him, and they called the apostles, and scourged them, and commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.	and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.	His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41	The apostles went out from the presence of the council rejoicing that they had been worthy to suffer abuse for the sake of his name.	Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.	The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.
42	And they did not cease to teach daily in the temple and at home and to preach concerning our LORD Jesus Christ.	And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.	Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.
