1 AND while they were speaking these words to the people, the priests and the Sad’du-cees and the leaders of the temple rose up against them, And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people.
2 Being infuriated that they taught the people and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
3 And they laid hands on them and detained them until the next day, for it was now eventide. And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day.
4 Howbeit many of them who heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.
5 And the next day, the leaders and the elders and the scribes gathered together; On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem.
6 And also Annas the high priest, and Ca’iaphas and John and Alexander and those who were of the family of the high priest. with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family.
7 And when they had made them to stand in the midst, they asked, By what power or by what name have you done this? And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
8 Then Simon Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Leaders of the people and elders of the house of Israel, listen. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!
9 If we are convicted today by you, concerning the good which has been done to a sick man, on the ground of by what means he was healed; if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed,
10 Then let it be known to you, and to all the people of Israel, By the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, and whom God raised from the dead, behold this man stands before you, healed. let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.
11 This is the stone which you builders have rejected, which is become the head of the corner. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. Jesus is “’the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’
12 There is no salvation by any other man; for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
13 Now when they had heard the speech of Simon Peter and John, which they had spoken boldly, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they recognized them that they had been with Jesus. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.
14 And because they saw the lame man who was healed standing with them they could say nothing against them. But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say.
15 But when they had commanded them to be taken aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together.
16 Saying, What shall we do to these men? for behold a miracle has openly been performed by them and it is known to all that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. “What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it.
17 But, so that this news should not spread further among the people, let us threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”
18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
19 But Simon Peter and John answered and said to them, Whether it be right before God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges!
20 For we cannot stop speaking about the things which we have seen and heard. for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go; for they found no cause to punish them because of the people: for all men praised God for that which was done. And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened. After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened.
22 For the man on whom this miracle of healing had been wrought, was more than forty years old. For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old. For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
23 After they were released, they went to their brethren and told them all that the high priests and elders had said. When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
24 And when they heard this, they all together lifted up their voice to God and said, O LORD, you are the God who has made heaven and earth and the seas and all that in them is: And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.
25 You are the One who spoke through the Holy Spirit by the mouth of your servant David when he said, Why did the people rage and the nations devise worthless things? who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, “‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: “’Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
26 The kings and the rulers of the earth have revolted and have taken counsel together against the LORD and against his Anointed. The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’— The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one.’
27 For truly, they assembled in this very city, together with both Herod and Pilate and with the Gentiles and with the people of Israel, against your holy Son Jesus, for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.
28 To execute whatever your hand and your will had previously decreed to take place. to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.
29 And even now, O LORD, look and see their threatenings; and grant to your servants that they may freely preach your word, And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.
30 Just as your hand is freely stretched out for healings, and wonders and the miracles which are done in the name of your holy Son Jesus. while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
31 And when they had petitioned and made their supplications, the place in which they were assembled together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they spoke the word of God boldly. And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness. After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
32 Now the congregation of the believers were of one soul and of one mind; not one of them spoke of the property he possessed as his own; but everything they had was in common. Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.
33 And the apostles testified with great power concerning the resurrection of Jesus Christ; and they were all greatly favored. And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all
34 There was not a man among them who was destitute; for those who possessed fields and houses sold them and brought the money for the things that were sold, There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales
35 And placed them at the disposal of the disciples; and the proceeds were then given to every man according to his needs. and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.
36 Now Joseph whom the apostles surnamed Bar’na-bas (which is, interpreted, the son of consolation), a Levite of the country of Cy’prus, Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”),
37 Had a field and he sold it and brought the price and placed it at the disposal of the apostles. sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet. sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.
