2	and suddenly a sound came from heaven like a rushing violent wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.	And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.	Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3	There appeared to them tongues resembling fire, which were being distributed [among them], and they rested on each one of them [as each person received the Holy Spirit].	And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.	They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
4	And they were all filled [that is, diffused throughout their being] with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues (different languages), as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out [clearly and appropriately].	And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.	All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
5	Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout and God-fearing men from every nation under heaven.	Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.	Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
6	And when this sound was heard, a crowd gathered, and they were bewildered because each one was hearing those in the upper room speaking in his own language or dialect.	And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.	When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.
7	They were completely astonished, saying, “Look! Are not all of these who are speaking Galileans?	And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?	Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?
8	Then how is it that each of us hears in our own language or native dialect?	And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?	Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?
9	[Among us there are] Parthians, Medes and Elamites, and people of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia [Minor],	Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,	Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10	Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and the visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes (Gentile converts to Judaism),	Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,	Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome
11	Cretans and Arabs—we all hear them speaking in our [native] tongues about the mighty works of God!”	both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”	(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
12	And they were beside themselves with amazement and were greatly perplexed, saying one to another, “What could this mean?”	And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”	Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13	But others were laughing and joking and ridiculing them, saying, “They are full of sweet wine and are drunk!”	But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”	Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
14	But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be explained to you; listen closely and pay attention to what I have to say.	But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.	Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
15	These people are not drunk, as you assume, since it is [only] the third hour of the day (9:00 a.m.);	For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.	These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning!
16	but this is [the beginning of] what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:	But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:	No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17	‘AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,’ says God, ‘THAT I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT UPON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE [divinely prompted] VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM [divinely prompted] DREAMS;	“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;	“’In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
18	EVEN ON MY BOND-SERVANTS, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR OUT MY SPIRIT And they shall prophesy.	even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.	Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
19	‘AND I WILL BRING ABOUT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE AND SIGNS (attesting miracles) ON THE EARTH BELOW, BLOOD AND FIRE AND SMOKING VAPOR.	And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;	I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20	‘THE SUN SHALL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD COMES.	the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.	The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21	‘AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD [invoking, adoring, and worshiping the Lord Jesus] SHALL BE SAVED (rescued spiritually).’	And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’	And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
22	“Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man accredited and pointed out and attested to you by God with [the power to perform] miracles and wonders and signs which God worked through Him in your [very] midst, just as you yourselves know—	“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—	“Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.
23	this Man, when handed over [to the Roman authorities] according to the predetermined decision and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross and put to death by the hands of lawless and godless men.	this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.	This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.
24	But God raised Him up, releasing Him and bringing an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in death’s power.	God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.	But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
25	For David says of Him, ‘I SAW THE LORD CONSTANTLY BEFORE ME; FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, SO THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN [from my state of security].	For David says concerning him, “‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;	David said about him: “’I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
26	‘THEREFORE MY HEART REJOICED AND MY TONGUE EXULTED EXCEEDINGLY; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE [that is, will encamp in anticipation of the resurrection];	therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope.	Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope,
27	FOR YOU WILL NOT FORSAKE ME and ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES (the realm of the dead), NOR LET YOUR HOLY ONE UNDERGO DECAY [after death].	For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.	because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay.
28	‘YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; YOU WILL FILL ME [infusing my soul] WITH JOY WITH YOUR PRESENCE.’	You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’	You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.’
29	“Brothers, I may confidently and freely say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.	“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.	“Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.
30	And so, being a prophet and knowing fully that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH THAT HE WOULD SEAT one OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE,	Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,	But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.
31	he foresaw and spoke [prophetically] of the resurrection of the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), that HE WAS NOT ABANDONED [in death] TO HADES (the realm of the dead), NOR DID His body UNDERGO DECAY.	he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.	Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.
32	God raised this Jesus [bodily from the dead], and of that [fact] we are all witnesses.	This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.	God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.
33	Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured out this [blessing] which you both see and hear.	Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.	Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
34	For David did not ascend into the heavens, yet he himself says, ‘THE LORD [the Father] SAID TO MY LORD [the Son], “SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,	For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,	For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, “’The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand
35	UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET.”’	until I make your enemies your footstool.”’	until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.\|’
36	Therefore let all the house of Israel recognize beyond all doubt that God has made Him both Lord and Christ (Messiah, Anointed)—this Jesus whom you crucified.”	Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”	“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”
37	Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart [with remorse and anxiety], and they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what are we to do?”	Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”	When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
38	And Peter said to them, “Repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways, accept and follow Jesus as the Messiah] and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ because of the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.	And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.	Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39	For the promise [of the Holy Spirit] is for you and your children and for all who are far away [including the Gentiles], as many as the Lord our God calls to Himself.”	For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”	The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
40	And Peter solemnly testified and continued to admonish and urge them with many more words, saying, “Be saved from this crooked and unjust generation!”	And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”	With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”
41	So then, those who accepted his message were baptized; and on that day about 3,000 souls were added [to the body of believers].	So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.	Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
42	They were continually and faithfully devoting themselves to the instruction of the apostles, and to fellowship, to eating meals together and to prayers.	And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.	They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
43	A sense of awe was felt by everyone, and many wonders and signs (attesting miracles) were taking place through the apostles.	And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.	Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.
44	And all those who had believed [in Jesus as Savior] were together and had all things in common [considering their possessions to belong to the group as a whole].	And all who believed were together and had all things in common.	All the believers were together and had everything in common.
45	And they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing the proceeds with all [the other believers], as anyone had need.	And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.	They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.
46	Day after day they met in the temple [area] continuing with one mind, and breaking bread in various private homes. They were eating their meals together with joy and generous hearts,	And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,	Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
47	praising God continually, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord kept adding to their number daily those who were being saved.	praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.	praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
