1	After these deeds and faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria and entered came into Judah, and he encamped against the fortified cities and said to rend them to himself.	After these things and these acts of faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them for himself.	After all that Hezekiah had so faithfully done, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities, thinking to conquer them for himself.
2	And saw Hezekiah that Sennacherib had come, and his face was to the battle against Jerusalem,	And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and intended to fight against Jerusalem,	When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that he intended to wage war against Jerusalem,
3	and he counseled with his leaders and commanders to stop up the water from the springs that were outside of the city, and they helped him.	he planned with his officers and his mighty men to stop the water of the springs that were outside the city; and they helped him.	he consulted with his officials and military staff about blocking off the water from the springs outside the city, and they helped him.
4	And many people gathered together, and they stopped up all the springs and the brook that was flowing in the midst of the land, saying, “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find many waters?”	A great many people were gathered, and they stopped all the springs and the brook that flowed through the land, saying, “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?”	They gathered a large group of people who blocked all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land. “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find plenty of water?” they said.
5	And he strengthened himself and built up all the wall that was broken, and he raised it up to the towers, and at the outside of the wall, another, and he strengthened the Millo in the City of David, and he made weapons in abundance, and shields.	He set to work resolutely and built up all the wall that was broken down and raised towers upon it, and outside it he built another wall, and he strengthened the Millo in the city of David. He also made weapons and shields in abundance.	Then he worked hard repairing all the broken sections of the wall and building towers on it. He built another wall outside that one and reinforced the terraces of the City of David. He also made large numbers of weapons and shields.
6	And he set military captains over the people, and he gathered them to himself in the plaza at the gate of the city, and he spoke to their heart, saying,	And he set combat commanders over the people and gathered them together to him in the square at the gate of the city and spoke encouragingly to them, saying,	He appointed military officers over the people and assembled them before him in the square at the city gate and encouraged them with these words:
7	“Be strong and be courageous! Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed from before the king of Assyria, and from before all the multitude that is with him, for more are with us than with him.	“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him, for there are more with us than with him.	“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him.
8	With him is an arm of flesh, and with us is YHWH our God to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people were upheld by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.	With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God, to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people took confidence from the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.	With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the king of Judah said.
9	After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem—and he was by Lachish, and all the forces with him—to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah who were in Jerusalem, saying,	After this, Sennacherib king of Assyria, who was besieging Lachish with all his forces, sent his servants to Jerusalem to Hezekiah king of Judah and to all the people of Judah who were in Jerusalem, saying,	Later, when Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces were laying siege to Lachish, he sent his officers to Jerusalem with this message for Hezekiah king of Judah and for all the people of Judah who were there:
10	“Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria: Upon what do you⁺ trust, that you remain under siege in Jerusalem?	“Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, ‘On what are you trusting, that you endure the siege in Jerusalem?	“This is what Sennacherib king of Assyria says: On what are you basing your confidence, that you remain in Jerusalem under siege?
11	Is not Hezekiah inciting you⁺ to give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, saying, ‘YHWH our God will snatch us up from the hand of the king of Assyria’?	Is not Hezekiah misleading you, that he may give you over to die by famine and by thirst, when he tells you, “The LORD our God will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria”?	When Hezekiah says, ‘The LORD our God will save us from the hand of the king of Assyria,’ he is misleading you, to let you die of hunger and thirst.
12	is it not He for whom Hezekiah has taken away His high places and His altars, and has spoken to Judah and to Jerusalem, saying, ‘You⁺ must worship before one altar, and on it burn incense’?	Has not this same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, “Before one altar you shall worship, and on it you shall burn your sacrifices”?	Did not Hezekiah himself remove this god’s high places and altars, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship before one altar and burn sacrifices on it’?
13	do not you⁺ know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have the gods of the nations of those lands ever been able to deliver their lands from my hand?	Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of other lands? Were the gods of the nations of those lands at all able to deliver their lands out of my hand?	“Do you not know what I and my predecessors have done to all the peoples of the other lands? Were the gods of those nations ever able to deliver their land from my hand?
14	Who among all the gods of these nations that my fathers devoted to destruction—who has been able to deliver his people from my hand, that your⁺ God should be able to snatch you⁺ up from my hand?	Who among all the gods of those nations that my fathers devoted to destruction was able to deliver his people from my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you from my hand?	Who of all the gods of these nations that my predecessors destroyed has been able to save his people from me? How then can your god deliver you from my hand?
15	And now, do not let Hezekiah deceive you⁺ or persuade you⁺ like this, and do not believe him, for not any god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. Also surely your⁺ God will not snatch you⁺ up from my hand!”	Now, therefore, do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you in this fashion, and do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you out of my hand!’”	Now do not let Hezekiah deceive you and mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or the hand of my predecessors. How much less will your god deliver you from my hand!”
16	And his servants spoke against YHWH God and against Hezekiah His servant.	And his servants said still more against the LORD God and against his servant Hezekiah.	Sennacherib’s officers spoke further against the LORD God and against his servant Hezekiah.
17	And he wrote letters to taunt YHWH, God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying, “As the gods of the nations of the lands that have not delivered their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah will not deliver His people from my hand.”	And he wrote letters to cast contempt on the LORD, the God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, “Like the gods of the nations of the lands who have not delivered their people from my hands, so the God of Hezekiah will not deliver his people from my hand.”	The king also wrote letters ridiculing the LORD, the God of Israel, and saying this against him: “Just as the gods of the peoples of the other lands did not rescue their people from my hand, so the god of Hezekiah will not rescue his people from my hand.”
18	And they called out in a loud voice in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten them and trouble them, that they might capture the city.	And they shouted it with a loud voice in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten and terrify them, in order that they might take the city.	Then they called out in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to terrify them and make them afraid in order to capture the city.
19	And they spoke against the God of Jerusalem as against the gods of the people of the earth—the work of the hands of men.	And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem as they spoke of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men’s hands.	They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of the other peoples of the world—the work of human hands.
20	And king Hezekiah prayed, and Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet, concerning this, and they cried out to the heavens.	Then Hezekiah the king and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed because of this and cried to heaven.	King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz cried out in prayer to heaven about this.
21	And YHWH sent a messenger and cut off every mighty man of valor and leader and captain in the camp of the king of Assyria. And he returned with shame of face to his land. And he entered the house of his god, and those coming out of his bowels struck him down there with the sword.	And the LORD sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty warriors and commanders and officers in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he came into the house of his god, some of his own sons struck him down there with the sword.	And the LORD sent an angel, who annihilated all the fighting men and the commanders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he went into the temple of his god, some of his sons, his own flesh and blood, cut him down with the sword.
22	And YHWH saved Hezekiah and those dwelling in Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all, and he gave them rest all around.	So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all his enemies, and he provided for them on every side.	So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all others. He took care of them on every side.
23	And many brought gifts to YHWH at Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah, and he was lifted up in the eyes of all nations after this.	And many brought gifts to the LORD to Jerusalem and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from that time onward.	Many brought offerings to Jerusalem for the LORD and valuable gifts for Hezekiah king of Judah. From then on he was highly regarded by all the nations.
24	In those days Hezekiah was sick even to death, and he prayed to YHWH, and He spoke to him and gave to him a sign.	In those days Hezekiah became sick and was at the point of death, and he prayed to the LORD, and he answered him and gave him a sign.	In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. He prayed to the LORD, who answered him and gave him a miraculous sign.
25	And Hezekiah did not repay according to the deed to him, for his heart was lifted up; and there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.	But Hezekiah did not make return according to the benefit done to him, for his heart was proud. Therefore wrath came upon him and Judah and Jerusalem.	But Hezekiah’s heart was proud and he did not respond to the kindness shown him; therefore the LORD’s wrath was on him and on Judah and Jerusalem.
26	And Hezekiah humbled himself for the loftiness of his heart, he and those dwelling in Jerusalem, so that the wrath of YHWH did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.	But Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.	Then Hezekiah repented of the pride of his heart, as did the people of Jerusalem; therefore the LORD’s wrath did not come on them during the days of Hezekiah.
27	And were unto Hezekiah riches and honor being very great, and treasuries he made to himself for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all kinds of desirable vessels,	And Hezekiah had very great riches and honor, and he made for himself treasuries for silver, for gold, for precious stones, for spices, for shields, and for all kinds of costly vessels;	Hezekiah had very great wealth and honor, and he made treasuries for his silver and gold and for his precious stones, spices, shields and all kinds of valuables.
28	and storehouses for the harvest of grain and wine and oil, and stalls for all kinds of various livestock, and herds for the stalls.	storehouses also for the yield of grain, wine, and oil; and stalls for all kinds of cattle, and sheepfolds.	He also made buildings to store the harvest of grain, new wine and olive oil; and he made stalls for various kinds of cattle, and pens for the flocks.
29	And he made cities for himself, and possessions of flock and herd in abundance, for God had given to him very much property.	He likewise provided cities for himself, and flocks and herds in abundance, for God had given him very great possessions.	He built villages and acquired great numbers of flocks and herds, for God had given him very great riches.
30	And Hezekiah himself stopped the Upper outlet of the waters of Gihon, and he directed them beneath to the west of the City of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.	This same Hezekiah closed the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon and directed them down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.	It was Hezekiah who blocked the upper outlet of the Gihon spring and channeled the water down to the west side of the City of David. He succeeded in everything he undertook.
31	And so with the ambassadors of the heads of Babylon, those sending to him to inquire about the sign that was done in the land, God withdrew from him in order to test him, that He might know all in his heart.	And so in the matter of the envoys of the princes of Babylon, who had been sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land, God left him to himself, in order to test him and to know all that was in his heart.	But when envoys were sent by the rulers of Babylon to ask him about the miraculous sign that had occurred in the land, God left him to test him and to know everything that was in his heart.
32	And the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his loving devotion, indeed they are written in the vision of Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet and in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.	Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.	The other events of Hezekiah’s reign and his acts of devotion are written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
33	And Hezekiah rested with his fathers, and they buried him in the upper tombs of the sons of David; and all Judah and those dwelling in Jerusalem did honor to him at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his place.	And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the upper part of the tombs of the sons of David, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his place.	Hezekiah rested with his ancestors and was buried on the hill where the tombs of David’s descendants are. All Judah and the people of Jerusalem honored him when he died. And Manasseh his son succeeded him as king.
