New Living Translation | King James Bible |
O God, whom I praise, don’t stand silent and aloof | 1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise; |
while the wicked slander me and tell lies about me. | 2For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue. |
They surround me with hateful words and fight against me for no reason. | 3They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause. |
I love them, but they try to destroy me with accusations even as I am praying for them! | 4For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer. |
They repay evil for good, and hatred for my love. | 5And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love. |
They say, “Get an evil person to turn against him. Send an accuser to bring him to trial. | 6Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand. |
When his case comes up for judgment, let him be pronounced guilty. Count his prayers as sins. | 7When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin. |
Let his years be few; let someone else take his position. | 8Let his days be few; and let another take his office. |
May his children become fatherless, and his wife a widow. | 9Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. |
May his children wander as beggars and be driven from their ruined homes. | 10Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places. |
May creditors seize his entire estate, and strangers take all he has earned. | 11Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour. |
Let no one be kind to him; let no one pity his fatherless children. | 12Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children. |
May all his offspring die. May his family name be blotted out in the next generation. | 13Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. |
May the LORD never forget the sins of his fathers; may his mother’s sins never be erased from the record. | 14Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. |
May the LORD always remember these sins, and may his name disappear from human memory. | 15Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth. |
For he refused all kindness to others; he persecuted the poor and needy, and he hounded the brokenhearted to death. | 16Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart. |
He loved to curse others; now you curse him. He never blessed others; now don’t you bless him. | 17As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him. |
Cursing is as natural to him as his clothing, or the water he drinks, or the rich food he eats. | 18As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones. |
Now may his curses return and cling to him like clothing; may they be tied around him like a belt.” | 19Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually. |
May those curses become the LORD’s punishment for my accusers who speak evil of me. | 20Let this be the reward of mine adversaries from the LORD, and of them that speak evil against my soul. |
But deal well with me, O Sovereign LORD, for the sake of your own reputation! Rescue me because you are so faithful and good. | 21But do thou for me, O GOD the Lord, for thy name's sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me. |
For I am poor and needy, and my heart is full of pain. | 22For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. |
I am fading like a shadow at dusk; I am brushed off like a locust. | 23I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust. |
My knees are weak from fasting, and I am skin and bones. | 24My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness. |
I am a joke to people everywhere; when they see me, they shake their heads in scorn. | 25I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shaked their heads. |
Help me, O LORD my God! Save me because of your unfailing love. | 26Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to thy mercy: |
Let them see that this is your doing, that you yourself have done it, LORD. | 27That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, LORD, hast done it. |
Then let them curse me if they like, but you will bless me! When they attack me, they will be disgraced! But I, your servant, will go right on rejoicing! | 28Let them curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let thy servant rejoice. |
May my accusers be clothed with disgrace; may their humiliation cover them like a cloak. | 29Let mine adversaries be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle. |
But I will give repeated thanks to the LORD, praising him to everyone. | 30I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude. |
For he stands beside the needy, ready to save them from those who condemn them. | 31For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul. |
