Exodus 22
NLT Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationInternational Standard Version
“If someone steals an ox or sheep and then kills or sells it, the thief must pay back five oxen for each ox stolen, and four sheep for each sheep stolen.1 "If a man steals an ox or sheep and slaughters it or sells it, he is to repay five oxen for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.
“If a thief is caught in the act of breaking into a house and is struck and killed in the process, the person who killed the thief is not guilty of murder.2"If a thief is found while breaking into a house, and is struck down and dies, it is not a capital crime in that case,
But if it happens in daylight, the one who killed the thief is guilty of murder. “A thief who is caught must pay in full for everything he stole. If he cannot pay, he must be sold as a slave to pay for his theft.3but if the sun has risen on him, then it is a capital crime in that case. A thief shall certainly make restitution, but if he has nothing, he is to be sold for his theft.
If someone steals an ox or a donkey or a sheep and it is found in the thief’s possession, then the thief must pay double the value of the stolen animal.4If what was stolen is actually found alive in his possession, whether an ox, a donkey or a sheep, he is to repay double.
“If an animal is grazing in a field or vineyard and the owner lets it stray into someone else’s field to graze, then the animal’s owner must pay compensation from the best of his own grain or grapes.5"When a man lets a field or vineyard be grazed over or releases his livestock so that they graze in another man's field, he is to make restitution from the best of his field or vineyard.
“If you are burning thornbushes and the fire gets out of control and spreads into another person’s field, destroying the sheaves or the uncut grain or the whole crop, the one who started the fire must pay for the lost crop.6"When a fire breaks out and spreads into thorn bushes and consumes stacked grain or standing grain or the field, the one who started the fire certainly is to make restitution.
“Suppose someone leaves money or goods with a neighbor for safekeeping, and they are stolen from the neighbor’s house. If the thief is caught, the compensation is double the value of what was stolen.7"When a man gives his neighbor money or goods for safekeeping and it's stolen from the neighbor's house, the thief, if found, is to repay double.
But if the thief is not caught, the neighbor must appear before God, who will determine if he stole the property.8If the thief is not found, the owner of the house is to appear before the judges to see whether or not the thief took his neighbor's property.
“Suppose there is a dispute between two people who both claim to own a particular ox, donkey, sheep, article of clothing, or any lost property. Both parties must come before God, and the person whom God declares guilty must pay double compensation to the other.9"In every ownership dispute involving an ox, donkey, sheep, garment, or anything that is lost where a person says, 'This is mine,' the case between the two of them is to come before the judges, and the one that the judges declare guilty is to repay double to his neighbor.
“Now suppose someone leaves a donkey, ox, sheep, or any other animal with a neighbor for safekeeping, but it dies or is injured or is taken away, and no one sees what happened.10"When a man gives a donkey, ox, sheep, or any animal to his neighbor for safe keeping, and it dies or is injured or is driven away when no one is looking,
The neighbor must then take an oath in the presence of the LORD. If the LORD confirms that the neighbor did not steal the property, the owner must accept the verdict, and no payment will be required.11the two of them are to take an oath in the LORD's presence that the accused has not taken his neighbor's property. Its owner is to accept this, and the neighbor is not to make restitution.
But if the animal was indeed stolen, the guilty person must pay compensation to the owner.12But if it was actually stolen from him, the neighbor is to make restitution to its owner.
If it was torn to pieces by a wild animal, the remains of the carcass must be shown as evidence, and no compensation will be required.13If it was torn to pieces, let the neighbor bring the remains as evidence, and he is not to make restitution for what was torn apart.
“If someone borrows an animal from a neighbor and it is injured or dies when the owner is absent, the person who borrowed it must pay full compensation.14"When a man borrows an animal from his neighbor, and it's injured or dies while its owner was not with it, he is certainly to make restitution.
But if the owner was present, no compensation is required. And no compensation is required if the animal was rented, for this loss is covered by the rental fee. Social Responsibility15If its owner was with it, he is not to make restitution. If it was hired, its fee covers the loss."
“If a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged to anyone and has sex with her, he must pay the customary bride price and marry her.16"When a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged to be married and has sexual relations with her, he must pay her bride price, and she is to become his wife.
But if her father refuses to let him marry her, the man must still pay him an amount equal to the bride price of a virgin.17If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he is to pay an amount equal to the bride price for virgins.
“You must not allow a sorceress to live.18"You are not to allow a sorceress to live.
“Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal must certainly be put to death.19"Whoever has sexual relations with an animal is certainly to be put to death.
“Anyone who sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.20"Anyone who sacrifices to a god, except the LORD alone, is to be utterly destroyed.
“You must not mistreat or oppress foreigners in any way. Remember, you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.21"You are not to wrong or oppress an alien, because you were aliens in the land of Egypt.
“You must not exploit a widow or an orphan.22"You are not to mistreat any widow or orphan.
If you exploit them in any way and they cry out to me, then I will certainly hear their cry.23If you do mistreat them, they'll certainly cry out to me, and I'll immediately hear their cry.
My anger will blaze against you, and I will kill you with the sword. Then your wives will be widows and your children fatherless.24And I'll be angry and will kill you with swords, and your wives will become widows and your children orphans.
“If you lend money to any of my people who are in need, do not charge interest as a money lender would.25"If you loan money to my people, to the poor among you, don't be like a creditor to them and don't impose interest on them.
If you take your neighbor’s cloak as security for a loan, you must return it before sunset.26If you take your neighbor's coat as collateral, you are to return it to him by sunset,
This coat may be the only blanket your neighbor has. How can a person sleep without it? If you do not return it and your neighbor cries out to me for help, then I will hear, for I am merciful.27for it's his only covering; it's his outer garment, for what else can he sleep in? And when he cries out to me, I'll hear him, for I am gracious.
“You must not dishonor God or curse any of your rulers.28"You are not to blaspheme God or curse a ruler of your people.
“You must not hold anything back when you give me offerings from your crops and your wine. “You must give me your firstborn sons.29"You are not to hold back the fullness of your harvest and the outflow of your wine presses. You are to give to me the firstborn of your sons.
“You must also give me the firstborn of your cattle, sheep, and goats. But leave the newborn animal with its mother for seven days; then give it to me on the eighth day.30You are to do the same with your oxen and your sheep. They shall be with their mother for seven days and then on the eighth day you are to give them to me.
“You must be my holy people. Therefore, do not eat any animal that has been torn up and killed by wild animals. Throw it to the dogs.31"You are to be people set apart for me. You are not to eat flesh torn apart in the field; you are to throw it to the dogs."
