Deuteronomy 22
NLT Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationInternational Standard Version
“If you see your neighbor’s ox or sheep or goat wandering away, don’t ignore your responsibility. Take it back to its owner.1"When you see the ox or sheep of your fellow countryman straying, don't go away and leave them. Instead, be sure to return them to him.
If its owner does not live nearby or you don’t know who the owner is, take it to your place and keep it until the owner comes looking for it. Then you must return it.2If your fellow countryman doesn't live near you or you don't know who he is, bring the animal to your house and let it remain with you until he claims it. Then return it to him.
Do the same if you find your neighbor’s donkey, clothing, or anything else your neighbor loses. Don’t ignore your responsibility.3Do the same for his donkey, his garment, and for anything lost that belongs to your fellow countryman. When you find it, you must not ignore it.
“If you see that your neighbor’s donkey or ox has collapsed on the road, do not look the other way. Go and help your neighbor get it back on its feet!4When you see the donkey or the ox of your fellow countryman fallen on the road, don't ignore them. Instead be sure to help them get up."
“A woman must not put on men’s clothing, and a man must not wear women’s clothing. Anyone who does this is detestable in the sight of the LORD your God.5"A woman must not wear what is appropriate to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman's garment, because anyone who does this is detestable to the LORD your God.
“If you happen to find a bird’s nest in a tree or on the ground, and there are young ones or eggs in it with the mother sitting in the nest, do not take the mother with the young.6"When you encounter a bird's nest along the road, whether in a tree or on the ground, and the mother bird is sitting on its chicks or eggs, don't take the mother along with its young.
You may take the young, but let the mother go, so that you may prosper and enjoy a long life.7You may take the young but be sure to release the mother, so that life will go well for you and that you may have a long life.
“When you build a new house, you must build a railing around the edge of its flat roof. That way you will not be considered guilty of murder if someone falls from the roof.8"When you build a new house, install a parapet along your roof so that if someone falls from the roof, you won't bring guilt of bloodshed on your house."
“You must not plant any other crop between the rows of your vineyard. If you do, you are forbidden to use either the grapes from the vineyard or the other crop.9"Don't plant two kinds of seeds in your vineyard. Otherwise, the entire crop will have to be forfeited, both the seed that you have sown and the produce from it.
“You must not plow with an ox and a donkey harnessed together.10"Don't plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together.
“You must not wear clothing made of wool and linen woven together.11"Don't wear material made from wool and linen mixed together.
“You must put four tassels on the hem of the cloak with which you cover yourself—on the front, back, and sides. Regulations for Sexual Purity12"Sew tassels for yourselves on the four corners of the garment with which you cover yourself."
“Suppose a man marries a woman, but after sleeping with her, he turns against her13"Suppose a man marries a wife but after having sexual relations with her, he despises her,
and publicly accuses her of shameful conduct, saying, ‘When I married this woman, I discovered she was not a virgin.’14invents charges against her, and defames her by saying, 'I have married this woman, but when I had sexual relations with her I found that she wasn't a virgin.'
Then the woman’s father and mother must bring the proof of her virginity to the elders as they hold court at the town gate.15Then the father of the young lady, along with her mother, is to bring evidence of the young lady's virginity to the elders at the gate.
Her father must say to them, ‘I gave my daughter to this man to be his wife, and now he has turned against her.16The father of the young lady is to then say to the elders: 'I have given my daughter to this man as a wife, but he despises her.
He has accused her of shameful conduct, saying, “I discovered that your daughter was not a virgin.” But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.’ Then they must spread her bed sheet before the elders.17Now look, he has invented charges against her by saying, "I haven't found your daughter to be a virgin." But here is the proof of my daughter's virginity.' Then they are to spread the cloth before the elders of the city.
The elders must then take the man and punish him.18The elders of that city will then take the man, punish him,
They must also fine him 100 pieces of silver, which he must pay to the woman’s father because he publicly accused a virgin of Israel of shameful conduct. The woman will then remain the man’s wife, and he may never divorce her.19fine him 100 shekels of silver, and then give them to the young lady's father, because he had defamed a virgin of Israel. She is to remain his wife and he can't divorce her as long as he lives.
“But suppose the man’s accusations are true, and he can show that she was not a virgin.20But if this charge is true, and the evidence of the young lady's virginity weren't found,
The woman must be taken to the door of her father’s home, and there the men of the town must stone her to death, for she has committed a disgraceful crime in Israel by being promiscuous while living in her parents’ home. In this way, you will purge this evil from among you.21they are to bring her to the door of her father's house. Then the men of the city are to stone her with boulders until she dies for doing a detestable thing in Israel—acting like a prostitute while in her father's house. By doing this, you will remove this evil from among you.
“If a man is discovered committing adultery, both he and the woman must die. In this way, you will purge Israel of such evil.22"If a man is caught having sexual relations with a married woman, then both of them must die—the man who had sex with the woman and the woman herself—so that this evil will be removed from Israel.
“Suppose a man meets a young woman, a virgin who is engaged to be married, and he has sexual intercourse with her. If this happens within a town,23"If a man meets a young virgin lady engaged to be married in the city and has sexual relations with her,
you must take both of them to the gates of that town and stone them to death. The woman is guilty because she did not scream for help. The man must die because he violated another man’s wife. In this way, you will purge this evil from among you.24then the two must be brought to the city gate and there they must be stoned to death—the girl because she was in a city but did not cry out for help, and the man who abused a woman who was engaged to another man. By doing this you are to remove this evil from among you.
“But if the man meets the engaged woman out in the country, and he rapes her, then only the man must die.25"If a man meets a girl in the country who is engaged to be married and then rapes her, the man alone—the one who had sexual relations with her—must die.
Do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no crime worthy of death. She is as innocent as a murder victim.26As for the young lady, don't do anything to her. The young lady did nothing worthy of death. This case is similar to when a man attacks his countryman and kills him.
Since the man raped her out in the country, it must be assumed that she screamed, but there was no one to rescue her.27Since he found her in the country, the engaged girl may have cried out, but there was no one to rescue her.
“Suppose a man has intercourse with a young woman who is a virgin but is not engaged to be married. If they are discovered,28"However, if a man meets a girl who isn't engaged to be married, and he seizes her, rapes her, and is later found out,
he must pay her father fifty pieces of silver. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he may never divorce her as long as he lives.29then the man who raped her must give 50 shekels of silver to the girl's father. Furthermore, he must marry her. Because he had violated her, he is to not divorce her as long as he lives.
“A man must not marry his father’s former wife, for this would violate his father.30 "A man must not marry his father's wife, so that he will not dishonor his father's memory."
