1So all Israel was listed in the genealogical records in The Book of the Kings of Israel. The Returning Exiles The people of Judah were exiled to Babylon because they were unfaithful to the LORD.1וְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ הִתְיַחְשׂ֔וּ וְהִנָּ֣ם כְּתוּבִ֔ים עַל־ סֵ֖פֶר מַלְכֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וִיהוּדָ֛ה הָגְל֥וּ לְבָבֶ֖ל בְּמַעֲלָֽם׃ ס
2The first of the exiles to return to their property in their former towns were priests, Levites, Temple servants, and other Israelites.2וְהַיּוֹשְׁבִים֙ הָרִ֣אשֹׁנִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּאֲחֻזָּתָ֖ם בְּעָרֵיהֶ֑ם יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים הַלְוִיִּ֖ם וְהַנְּתִינִֽים׃
3Some of the people from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh came and settled in Jerusalem.3וּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ יָשְׁב֔וּ מִן־ בְּנֵ֥י יְהוּדָ֖ה וּמִן־ בְּנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֑ן וּמִן־ בְּנֵ֥י אֶפְרַ֖יִם וּמְנַשֶּֽׁה׃
4One family that returned was that of Uthai son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, a descendant of Perez son of Judah.4עוּתַ֨י בֶּן־ עַמִּיה֤וּד בֶּן־ עָמְרִי֙ בֶּן־ אִמְרִ֣י בֶן־ [בנימן־] (בָּנִ֔י) (מִן־) בְּנֵי־ פֶ֖רֶץ בֶּן־ יְהוּדָֽה׃
5Others returned from the Shilonite clan, including Asaiah (the oldest) and his sons.5וּמִן־ הַשִּׁ֣ילוֹנִ֔י עֲשָׂיָ֥ה הַבְּכ֖וֹר וּבָנָֽיו׃
6From the Zerahite clan, Jeuel returned with his relatives. In all, 690 families from the tribe of Judah returned.6וּמִן־ בְּנֵי־ זֶ֖רַח יְעוּאֵ֑ל וַאֲחֵיהֶ֖ם שֵׁשׁ־ מֵא֥וֹת וְתִשְׁעִֽים׃
7From the tribe of Benjamin came Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah;7וּמִן־ בְּנֵ֖י בִּנְיָמִ֑ן סַלּוּא֙ בֶּן־ מְשֻׁלָּ֔ם בֶּן־ הוֹדַוְיָ֖ה בֶּן־ הַסְּנֻאָֽה׃
8Ibneiah son of Jeroham; Elah son of Uzzi, son of Micri; and Meshullam son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah.8וְיִבְנְיָה֙ בֶּן־ יְרֹחָ֔ם וְאֵלָ֥ה בֶן־ עֻזִּ֖י בֶּן־ מִכְרִ֑י וּמְשֻׁלָּם֙ בֶּן־ שְׁפַטְיָ֔ה בֶּן־ רְעוּאֵ֖ל בֶּן־ יִבְנִיָּֽה׃
9These men were all leaders of clans, and they were listed in their genealogical records. In all, 956 families from the tribe of Benjamin returned. The Returning Priests9וַאֲחֵיהֶם֙ לְתֹ֣לְדוֹתָ֔ם תְּשַׁ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁ֣ים וְשִׁשָּׁ֑ה כָּל־ אֵ֣לֶּה אֲנָשִׁ֔ים רָאשֵׁ֥י אָב֖וֹת לְבֵ֥ית אֲבֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ ס
10Among the priests who returned were Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jakin,10וּמִן־ הַֽכֹּהֲנִ֑ים יְדַֽעְיָ֥ה וִיהוֹיָרִ֖יב וְיָכִֽין׃
11Azariah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub. Azariah was the chief officer of the house of God.11וַעֲזַרְיָ֨ה בֶן־ חִלְקִיָּ֜ה בֶּן־ מְשֻׁלָּ֣ם בֶּן־ צָד֗וֹק בֶּן־ מְרָיוֹת֙ בֶּן־ אֲחִיט֔וּב נְגִ֖יד בֵּ֥ית הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ ס
12Other returning priests were Adaiah son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malkijah, and Maasai son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer.12וַעֲדָיָה֙ בֶּן־ יְרֹחָ֔ם בֶּן־ פַּשְׁח֖וּר בֶּן־ מַלְכִּיָּ֑ה וּמַעְשַׂ֨י בֶּן־ עֲדִיאֵ֧ל בֶּן־ יַחְזֵ֛רָה בֶּן־ מְשֻׁלָּ֥ם בֶּן־ מְשִׁלֵּמִ֖ית בֶּן־ אִמֵּֽר׃
13In all, 1,760 priests returned. They were heads of clans and very able men. They were responsible for ministering at the house of God. The Returning Levites13וַאֲחֵיהֶ֗ם רָאשִׁים֙ לְבֵ֣ית אֲבוֹתָ֔ם אֶ֕לֶף וּשְׁבַ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת וְשִׁשִּׁ֑ים גִּבּ֣וֹרֵי חֵ֔יל מְלֶ֖אכֶת עֲבוֹדַ֥ת בֵּית־ הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃
14The Levites who returned were Shemaiah son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, a descendant of Merari;14וּמִֽן־ הַלְוִיִּ֑ם שְׁמַֽעְיָ֧ה בֶן־ חַשּׁ֛וּב בֶּן־ עַזְרִיקָ֥ם בֶּן־ חֲשַׁבְיָ֖ה מִן־ בְּנֵ֥י מְרָרִֽי׃
15Bakbakkar; Heresh; Galal; Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zicri, son of Asaph;15וּבַקְבַּקַּ֥ר חֶ֖רֶשׁ וְגָלָ֑ל וּמַתַּנְיָה֙ בֶּן־ מִיכָ֔א בֶּן־ זִכְרִ֖י בֶּן־ אָסָֽף׃
16Obadiah son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun; and Berekiah son of Asa, son of Elkanah, who lived in the area of Netophah.16וְעֹבַדְיָה֙ בֶּֽן־ שְׁמַֽעְיָ֔ה בֶּן־ גָּלָ֖ל בֶּן־ יְדוּת֑וּן וּבֶרֶכְיָ֤ה בֶן־ אָסָא֙ בֶּן־ אֶלְקָנָ֔ה הַיּוֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּחַצְרֵ֥י נְטוֹפָתִֽי׃
17The gatekeepers who returned were Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their relatives. Shallum was the chief gatekeeper.17וְהַשֹּׁעֲרִים֙ שַׁלּ֣וּם וְעַקּ֔וּב וְטַלְמֹ֖ן וַאֲחִימָ֑ן וַאֲחִיהֶ֥ם שַׁלּ֖וּם הָרֹֽאשׁ׃
18Prior to this time, they were responsible for the King’s Gate on the east side. These men served as gatekeepers for the camps of the Levites.18וְֽעַד־ הֵ֔נָּה בְּשַׁ֥עַר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ מִזְרָ֑חָה הֵ֚מָּה הַשֹּׁ֣עֲרִ֔ים לְמַחֲנ֖וֹת בְּנֵ֥י לֵוִֽי׃
19Shallum was the son of Kore, a descendant of Abiasaph, from the clan of Korah. He and his relatives, the Korahites, were responsible for guarding the entrance to the sanctuary, just as their ancestors had guarded the Tabernacle in the camp of the LORD.19וְשַׁלּ֣וּם בֶּן־ ק֠וֹרֵא בֶּן־ אֶבְיָסָ֨ף בֶּן־ קֹ֜רַח וְֽאֶחָ֧יו לְבֵית־ אָבִ֣יו הַקָּרְחִ֗ים עַ֚ל מְלֶ֣אכֶת הָעֲבוֹדָ֔ה שֹׁמְרֵ֥י הַסִּפִּ֖ים לָאֹ֑הֶל וַאֲבֹֽתֵיהֶם֙ עַל־ מַחֲנֵ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה שֹׁמְרֵ֖י הַמָּבֽוֹא׃
20Phinehas son of Eleazar had been in charge of the gatekeepers in earlier times, and the LORD had been with him.20וּפִֽינְחָ֣ס בֶּן־ אֶלְעָזָ֗ר נָגִ֨יד הָיָ֧ה עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם לְפָנִ֖ים יְהוָ֥ה ׀ עִמּֽוֹ׃
21And later Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was responsible for guarding the entrance to the Tabernacle.21זְכַרְיָה֙ בֶּ֣ן מְשֶֽׁלֶמְיָ֔ה שֹׁעֵ֥ר פֶּ֖תַח לְאֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃
22In all, there were 212 gatekeepers in those days, and they were listed according to the genealogies in their villages. David and Samuel the seer had appointed their ancestors because they were reliable men.22כֻּלָּ֤ם הַבְּרוּרִים֙ לְשֹׁעֲרִ֣ים בַּסִּפִּ֔ים מָאתַ֖יִם וּשְׁנֵ֣ים עָשָׂ֑ר הֵ֤מָּה בְחַצְרֵיהֶם֙ הִתְיַחְשָׂ֔ם הֵ֣מָּה יִסַּ֥ד דָּוִ֛יד וּשְׁמוּאֵ֥ל הָרֹאֶ֖ה בֶּאֱמוּנָתָֽם׃
23These gatekeepers and their descendants, by their divisions, were responsible for guarding the entrance to the house of the LORD when that house was a tent.23וְהֵ֨ם וּבְנֵיהֶ֜ם עַל־ הַשְּׁעָרִ֧ים לְבֵית־ יְהוָ֛ה לְבֵ֥ית־ הָאֹ֖הֶל לְמִשְׁמָרֽוֹת׃
24The gatekeepers were stationed on all four sides—east, west, north, and south.24לְאַרְבַּ֣ע רוּח֔וֹת יִהְי֖וּ הַשֹּׁעֲרִ֑ים מִזְרָ֥ח יָ֖מָּה צָפ֥וֹנָה וָנֶֽגְבָּה׃
25Their relatives in the villages came regularly to share their duties for seven-day periods.25וַאֲחֵיהֶ֨ם בְּחַצְרֵיהֶ֜ם לָב֨וֹא לְשִׁבְעַ֧ת הַיָּמִ֛ים מֵעֵ֥ת אֶל־ עֵ֖ת עִם־ אֵֽלֶּה׃
26The four chief gatekeepers, all Levites, were trusted officials, for they were responsible for the rooms and treasuries at the house of God.26כִּ֣י בֶאֱמוּנָ֞ה הֵ֗מָּה אַרְבַּ֙עַת֙ גִּבֹּרֵ֣י הַשֹּׁעֲרִ֔ים הֵ֖ם הַלְוִיִּ֑ם וְהָיוּ֙ עַל־ הַלְּשָׁכ֔וֹת וְעַ֥ל הָאֹצְר֖וֹת בֵּ֥ית הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃
27They would spend the night around the house of God, since it was their duty to guard it and to open the gates every morning.27וּסְבִיב֥וֹת בֵּית־ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים יָלִ֑ינוּ כִּֽי־ עֲלֵיהֶ֣ם מִשְׁמֶ֔רֶת וְהֵ֥ם עַל־ הַמַּפְתֵּ֖חַ וְלַבֹּ֥קֶר לַבֹּֽקֶר׃
28Some of the gatekeepers were assigned to care for the various articles used in worship. They checked them in and out to avoid any loss.28וּמֵהֶ֖ם עַל־ כְּלֵ֣י הָעֲבוֹדָ֑ה כִּֽי־ בְמִסְפָּ֣ר יְבִיא֔וּם וּבְמִסְפָּ֖ר יוֹצִיאֽוּם׃
29Others were responsible for the furnishings, the items in the sanctuary, and the supplies, such as choice flour, wine, olive oil, frankincense, and spices.29וּמֵהֶ֗ם מְמֻנִּים֙ עַל־ הַכֵּלִ֔ים וְעַ֖ל כָּל־ כְּלֵ֣י הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ וְעַל־ הַסֹּ֙לֶת֙ וְהַיַּ֣יִן וְהַשֶּׁ֔מֶן וְהַלְּבוֹנָ֖ה וְהַבְּשָׂמִֽים׃
30But it was the priests who blended the spices.30וּמִן־ בְּנֵי֙ הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים רֹקְחֵ֥י הַמִּרְקַ֖חַת לַבְּשָׂמִֽים׃
31Mattithiah, a Levite and the oldest son of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with baking the bread used in the offerings.31וּמַתִּתְיָה֙ מִן־ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם ה֥וּא הַבְּכ֖וֹר לְשַׁלֻּ֣ם הַקָּרְחִ֑י בֶּאֱמוּנָ֕ה עַ֖ל מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה הַחֲבִתִּֽים׃
32And some members of the clan of Kohath were in charge of preparing the bread to be set on the table each Sabbath day.32וּמִן־ בְּנֵ֧י הַקְּהָתִ֛י מִן־ אֲחֵיהֶ֖ם עַל־ לֶ֣חֶם הַֽמַּעֲרָ֑כֶת לְהָכִ֖ין שַׁבַּ֥ת שַׁבָּֽת׃ ס
33The musicians, all prominent Levites, lived at the Temple. They were exempt from other responsibilities since they were on duty at all hours.33וְאֵ֣לֶּה הַ֠מְשֹׁרְרִים רָאשֵׁ֨י אָב֧וֹת לַלְוִיִּ֛ם בַּלְּשָׁכֹ֖ת [פטירים] (פְּטוּרִ֑ים) כִּֽי־ יוֹמָ֥ם וָלַ֛יְלָה עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם בַּמְּלָאכָֽה׃
34All these men lived in Jerusalem. They were the heads of Levite families and were listed as prominent leaders in their genealogical records. King Saul’s Family Tree34אֵלֶּה֩ רָאשֵׁ֨י הָאָב֧וֹת לַלְוִיִּ֛ם לְתֹלְדוֹתָ֖ם רָאשִׁ֑ים אֵ֖לֶּה יָשְׁב֥וּ בִירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ פ
35Jeiel (the father of Gibeon) lived in the town of Gibeon. His wife’s name was Maacah,35וּבְגִבְע֛וֹן יָשְׁב֥וּ אֲבִֽי־ גִבְע֖וֹן [יעואל] (יְעִיאֵ֑ל) וְשֵׁ֥ם אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ מַעֲכָֽה׃
36and his oldest son was named Abdon. Jeiel’s other sons were Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab,36וּבְנ֥וֹ הַבְּכ֖וֹר עַבְדּ֑וֹן וְצ֣וּר וְקִ֔ישׁ וּבַ֥עַל וְנֵ֖ר וְנָדָֽב׃
37Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth.37וּגְד֣וֹר וְאַחְי֔וֹ וּזְכַרְיָ֖ה וּמִקְלֽוֹת׃
38Mikloth was the father of Shimeam. All these families lived near each other in Jerusalem.38וּמִקְל֖וֹת הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־ שִׁמְאָ֑ם וְאַף־ הֵ֗ם נֶ֧גֶד אֲחֵיהֶ֛ם יָשְׁב֥וּ בִירֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם עִם־ אֲחֵיהֶֽם׃ ס
39Ner was the father of Kish. Kish was the father of Saul. Saul was the father of Jonathan, Malkishua, Abinadab, and Esh-baal.39וְנֵר֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־ קִ֔ישׁ וְקִ֖ישׁ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־ שָׁא֑וּל וְשָׁא֗וּל הוֹלִ֤יד אֶת־ יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ וְאֶת־ מַלְכִּי־ שׁ֔וּעַ וְאֶת־ אֲבִינָדָ֖ב וְאֶת־ אֶשְׁבָּֽעַל׃
40Jonathan was the father of Merib-baal. Merib-baal was the father of Micah.40וּבֶן־ יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן מְרִ֣יב בָּ֑עַל וּמְרִי־ בַ֖עַל הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־ מִיכָֽה׃
41The sons of Micah were Pithon, Melech, Tahrea, and Ahaz.41וּבְנֵ֖י מִיכָ֑ה פִּית֥וֹן וָמֶ֖לֶךְ וְתַחְרֵֽעַ׃
42Ahaz was the father of Jadah. Jadah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri. Zimri was the father of Moza.42וְאָחָז֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־ יַעְרָ֔ה וְיַעְרָ֗ה הוֹלִ֛יד אֶת־ עָלֶ֥מֶת וְאֶת־ עַזְמָ֖וֶת וְאֶת־ זִמְרִ֑י וְזִמְרִ֖י הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־ מוֹצָֽא׃
43Moza was the father of Binea. Binea’s son was Rephaiah. Rephaiah’s son was Eleasah. Eleasah’s son was Azel.43וּמוֹצָ֖א הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־ בִּנְעָ֑א וּרְפָיָ֥ה בְנ֛וֹ אֶלְעָשָׂ֥ה בְנ֖וֹ אָצֵ֥ל בְּנֽוֹ׃
44Azel had six sons, whose names were Azrikam, Bokeru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.44וּלְאָצֵל֮ שִׁשָּׁ֣ה בָנִים֒ וְאֵ֣לֶּה שְׁמוֹתָ֗ם עַזְרִיקָ֥ם ׀ בֹּ֙כְרוּ֙ וְיִשְׁמָעֵ֣אל וּשְׁעַרְיָ֔ה וְעֹבַדְיָ֖ה וְחָנָ֑ן אֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י אָצַֽל׃ פ
