| 1The LORD gave another message to Jeremiah. He said, | 1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: |
| 2“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Write down for the record everything I have said to you, Jeremiah. | 2“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Write in a book all the words that I have spoken to you. |
| 3For the time is coming when I will restore the fortunes of my people of Israel and Judah. I will bring them home to this land that I gave to their ancestors, and they will possess it again. I, the LORD, have spoken!” | 3For behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will restore from captivity My people Israel and Judah, declares the LORD. I will restore them to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they will possess it.’ ” |
| 4This is the message the LORD gave concerning Israel and Judah. | 4These are the words that the LORD spoke concerning Israel and Judah. |
| 5This is what the LORD says: “I hear cries of fear; there is terror and no peace. | 5Yes, this is what the LORD says: “A cry of panic is heard—a cry of terror, not of peace. |
| 6Now let me ask you a question: Do men give birth to babies? Then why do they stand there, ashen-faced, hands pressed against their sides like a woman in labor? | 6Ask now, and see: Can a male give birth? Why then do I see every man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor and every face turned pale? |
| 7In all history there has never been such a time of terror. It will be a time of trouble for my people Israel. Yet in the end they will be saved! | 7How awful that day will be! None will be like it! It is the time of Jacob’s distress, but he will be saved out of it. |
| 8For in that day,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, “I will break the yoke from their necks and snap their chains. Foreigners will no longer be their masters. | 8On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will break the yoke off their necks and tear off their bonds, and no longer will strangers enslave them. |
| 9For my people will serve the LORD their God and their king descended from David— the king I will raise up for them. | 9Instead, they will serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them. |
| 10“So do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant; do not be dismayed, Israel,” says the LORD. “For I will bring you home again from distant lands, and your children will return from their exile. Israel will return to a life of peace and quiet, and no one will terrorize them. | 10As for you, O Jacob My servant, do not be afraid, declares the LORD, and do not be dismayed, O Israel. For I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their captivity! Jacob will return to quiet and ease, with no one to make him afraid. |
| 11For I am with you and will save you,” says the LORD. “I will completely destroy the nations where I have scattered you, but I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you, but with justice; I cannot let you go unpunished.” | 11For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD. Though I will completely destroy all the nations to which I have scattered you, I will not completely destroy you. Yet I will discipline you justly, and will by no means leave you unpunished.” |
| 12This is what the LORD says: “Your injury is incurable— a terrible wound. | 12For this is what the LORD says: “Your injury is incurable; your wound is grievous. |
| 13There is no one to help you or to bind up your injury. No medicine can heal you. | 13There is no one to plead your cause, no remedy for your sores, no recovery for you. |
| 14All your lovers—your allies—have left you and do not care about you anymore. I have wounded you cruelly, as though I were your enemy. For your sins are many, and your guilt is great. | 14All your lovers have forgotten you; they no longer seek you, for I have struck you as an enemy would, with the discipline of someone cruel, because of your great iniquity and your numerous sins. |
| 15Why do you protest your punishment— this wound that has no cure? I have had to punish you because your sins are many and your guilt is great. | 15Why do you cry out over your wound? Your pain has no cure! Because of your great iniquity and your numerous sins I have done these things to you. |
| 16“But all who devour you will be devoured, and all your enemies will be sent into exile. All who plunder you will be plundered, and all who attack you will be attacked. | 16Nevertheless, all who devour you will be devoured, and all your adversaries—every one of them—will go off into exile. Those who plundered you will be plundered, and all who raided you will be raided. |
| 17I will give you back your health and heal your wounds,” says the LORD. “For you are called an outcast— ‘Jerusalem for whom no one cares.’” | 17But I will restore your health and heal your wounds, declares the LORD, because they call you an outcast, Zion, for whom no one cares.” |
| 18This is what the LORD says: “When I bring Israel home again from captivity and restore their fortunes, Jerusalem will be rebuilt on its ruins, and the palace reconstructed as before. | 18This is what the LORD says: “I will restore the fortunes of Jacob’s tents and have compassion on his dwellings. And the city will be rebuilt on her own ruins, and the palace will stand in its rightful place. |
| 19There will be joy and songs of thanksgiving, and I will multiply my people, not diminish them; I will honor them, not despise them. | 19Thanksgiving will proceed from them, a sound of celebration. I will multiply them, and they will not be decreased; I will honor them, and they will not be belittled. |
| 20Their children will prosper as they did long ago. I will establish them as a nation before me, and I will punish anyone who hurts them. | 20Their children will be as in days of old, and their congregation will be established before Me; and I will punish all their oppressors. |
| 21They will have their own ruler again, and he will come from their own people. I will invite him to approach me,” says the LORD, “for who would dare to come unless invited? | 21Their leader will be one of their own, and their ruler will arise from their midst. And I will bring him near, and he will approach Me, for who would dare on his own to approach Me?” declares the LORD. |
| 22You will be my people, and I will be your God.” | 22“And you will be My people, and I will be your God.” |
| 23Look! The LORD’s anger bursts out like a storm, a driving wind that swirls down on the heads of the wicked. | 23Behold, the storm of the LORD has gone out with fury, a whirlwind swirling down upon the heads of the wicked. |
| 24The fierce anger of the LORD will not diminish until it has finished all he has planned. In the days to come you will understand all this. | 24The fierce anger of the LORD will not turn back until He has fully accomplished the purposes of His heart. In the days to come you will understand this. |
