After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.1Afterward Jesus returned to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish holy days.
Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.2Inside the city, near the Sheep Gate, was the pool of Bethesda, with five covered porches.
In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water.3Crowds of sick people—blind, lame, or paralyzed—lay on the porches.
For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had.4
Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years.5One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years.
When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”6When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?”
The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”7“I can’t, sir,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.”
Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”8Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!”
And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.9Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking! But this miracle happened on the Sabbath,
The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”10so the Jewish leaders objected. They said to the man who was cured, “You can’t work on the Sabbath! The law doesn’t allow you to carry that sleeping mat!”
He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”11But he replied, “The man who healed me told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”
Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?”12“Who said such a thing as that?” they demanded.
But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place.13The man didn’t know, for Jesus had disappeared into the crowd.
Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”14But afterward Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, “Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you.”
The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.15Then the man went and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had healed him. Jesus Claims to Be the Son of God
For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.16So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules.
But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”17But Jesus replied, “My Father is always working, and so am I.”
Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.18So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.
Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.19So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.
For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished.
For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.21 For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants.
For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,22 In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge,
that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.23 so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.24 “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.
Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.25 “And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live.
For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,26 The Father has life in himself, and he has granted that same life-giving power to his Son.
and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.27 And he has given him authority to judge everyone because he is the Son of Man.
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice28 Don’t be so surprised! Indeed, the time is coming when all the dead in their graves will hear the voice of God’s Son,
and come forth— those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.29 and they will rise again. Those who have done good will rise to experience eternal life, and those who have continued in evil will rise to experience judgment.
I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.30 I can do nothing on my own. I judge as God tells me. Therefore, my judgment is just, because I carry out the will of the one who sent me, not my own will. Witnesses to Jesus
“If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true.31 “If I were to testify on my own behalf, my testimony would not be valid.
There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true.32 But someone else is also testifying about me, and I assure you that everything he says about me is true.
You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.33 In fact, you sent investigators to listen to John the Baptist, and his testimony about me was true.
Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved.34 Of course, I have no need of human witnesses, but I say these things so you might be saved.
He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.35 John was like a burning and shining lamp, and you were excited for a while about his message.
But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.36 But I have a greater witness than John—my teachings and my miracles. The Father gave me these works to accomplish, and they prove that he sent me.
And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.37 And the Father who sent me has testified about me himself. You have never heard his voice or seen him face to face,
But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe.38 and you do not have his message in your hearts, because you do not believe me—the one he sent to you.
You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.39 “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!
But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.40 Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life.
“I do not receive honor from men.41 “Your approval means nothing to me,
But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.42 because I know you don’t have God’s love within you.
I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.43 For I have come to you in my Father’s name, and you have rejected me. Yet if others come in their own name, you gladly welcome them.
How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God?44 No wonder you can’t believe! For you gladly honor each other, but you don’t care about the honor that comes from the one who alone is God.
Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust.45 “Yet it isn’t I who will accuse you before the Father. Moses will accuse you! Yes, Moses, in whom you put your hopes.
For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me.46 If you really believed Moses, you would believe me, because he wrote about me.
But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”47 But since you don’t believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?”
