Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.1When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases,
He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.2and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece.3He told them: "Take nothing for the journey--no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.
“Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.4Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.
And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”5If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."
So they departed and went through the towns, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.6So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.
Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by Him; and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,7Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead,
and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again.8others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.
Herod said, “John I have beheaded, but who is this of whom I hear such things?” So he sought to see Him.9But Herod said, "I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?" And he tried to see him.
And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.10When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,
But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing.11but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.
When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted place here.”12Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here."
But He said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people.”13He replied, "You give them something to eat." They answered, "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish--unless we go and buy food for all this crowd."
For there were about five thousand men. Then He said to His disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of fifty.”14(About five thousand men were there.) But he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each."
And they did so, and made them all sit down.15The disciples did so, and everyone sat down.
Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude.16Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people.
So they all ate and were filled, and twelve baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them.17They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
And it happened, as He was alone praying, that His disciples joined Him, and He asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”18Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"
So they answered and said, “John the Baptist, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets has risen again.”19They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life."
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said, “The Christ of God.”20"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "God's Messiah."
And He strictly warned and commanded them to tell this to no one,21Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.
saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.”22And he said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life."
Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.23Then he said to them all: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.24For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.
For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?25What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?
For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels.26Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the kingdom of God.”27"Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God."
Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray.28About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.
As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening.29As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.
And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah,30Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus.
who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.31They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.
But Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who stood with Him.32Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
Then it happened, as they were parting from Him, that Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said.33As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." (He did not know what he was saying.)
While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were fearful as they entered the cloud.34While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!”35A voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him."
When the voice had ceased, Jesus was found alone. But they kept quiet, and told no one in those days any of the things they had seen.36When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.
Now it happened on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a great multitude met Him.37The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him.
Suddenly a man from the multitude cried out, saying, “Teacher, I implore You, look on my son, for he is my only child.38A man in the crowd called out, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child.
And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him so that he foams at the mouth; and it departs from him with great difficulty, bruising him.39A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him.
So I implored Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.”40I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not."
Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”41"You unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here."
And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. Then Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the child, and gave him back to his father.42Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father.
And they were all amazed at the majesty of God. But while everyone marveled at all the things which Jesus did, He said to His disciples,43And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples,
“Let these words sink down into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”44"Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men."
But they did not understand this saying, and it was hidden from them so that they did not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying.45But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
Then a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest.46An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.
And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a little child and set him by Him,47Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him.
and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all will be great.”48Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest."
Now John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us.”49"Master," said John, "we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us."
But Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him, for he who is not against us is on our side.”50"Do not stop him," Jesus said, "for whoever is not against you is for you."
Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem,51As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.
and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him.52And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him;
But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem.53but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.
And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?”54When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?"
But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.55But Jesus turned and rebuked them.
For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village.56Then he and his disciples went to another village.
Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”57As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”58Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”59He said to another man, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”60Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.”61Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family."
But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”62Jesus replied, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."
