| 24So when her days were fulfilled for her to give birth, indeed there were twins in her womb. | 24When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb. |
| 25And the first came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over; so they called his name Esau. | 25The first one came out red, covered with hair like a fur coat; so they named him Esau. |
| 26Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau’s heel; so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. | 26After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born. |
| 27So the boys grew. And Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was a mild man, dwelling in tents. | 27When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home. |
| 28And Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. | 28Because Isaac had a taste for wild game, he loved Esau; but Rebekah loved Jacob. |
| 29Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary. | 29One day, while Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished. |
| 30And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom. | 30He said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am famished.” (That is why he was also called Edom.) |
| 31But Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright as of this day.” | 31“First sell me your birthright,” Jacob replied. |
| 32And Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?” | 32“Look,” said Esau, “I am about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?” |
| 33Then Jacob said, “Swear to me as of this day.” So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. | 33“Swear to me first,” Jacob said. So Esau swore to Jacob and sold him the birthright. |
| 34And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright. | 34Then Jacob gave some bread and lentil stew to Esau, who ate and drank and then got up and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright. |
