| 1Then God said to Jacob, "Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau." | 1And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother. |
| 2So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. | 2Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments: |
| 3Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone." | 3And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went. |
| 4So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem. | 4And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem. |
| 5Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them. | 5And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob. |
| 6Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan. | 6So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him. |
| 7There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel, because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother. | 7And he built there an altar, and called the place Elbethel: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother. |
| 8Now Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died and was buried under the oak outside Bethel. So it was named Allon Bakuth. | 8But Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: and the name of it was called Allonbachuth. |
| 9After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him. | 9And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him. |
| 10God said to him, "Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel." So he named him Israel. | 10And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel. |
| 11And God said to him, "I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. | 13Then God went up from him at the place where he had talked with him. | 13And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him. |
| 14Jacob set up a stone pillar at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it. | 14And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon. |
| 15Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel. | 15And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel. |
| 16Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty. | 16And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour. |

| 18As she breathed her last--for she was dying--she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin. | 18And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin. |
| 19So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). | 19And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. |
| 20Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day that pillar marks Rachel's tomb. | 20And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day. |
| 21Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder. | 21And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar. |
| 22While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father's concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard of it. Jacob had twelve sons: | 22And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: |

| 27Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre, near Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed. | 27And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned. |
| 28Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years. | 28And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years. |
