| 1Now the Pharisees and some of the experts in the law who came from Jerusalem gathered around him. | 1The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus. |
| 2And they saw that some of Jesus' disciples ate their bread with unclean hands, that is, unwashed. | 2They noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. |
| 3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they perform a ritual washing, holding fast to the tradition of the elders. | 3(The Pharisees—and indeed all the Jewish people—don't eat unless they wash their hands properly, following the tradition of their elders. |
| 4And when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. They hold fast to many other traditions: the washing of cups, pots, kettles, and dining couches.) | 4They don't eat anything from the marketplace unless they dip it in water. They also observe many other traditions, such as the proper washing of washing cups, jars, brass pots, and dinner tables.) |
| 5The Pharisees and the experts in the law asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with unwashed hands?" | 5So the Pharisees and the scribes asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders? Instead, they eat with unclean hands." |
| 6He said to them, "Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. | 6He told them, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites. As it is written, 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. |
| 7They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrine the commandments of men.' | 7Their worship of me is worthless, because they teach human rules as doctrines.' |
| 8Having no regard for the command of God, you hold fast to human tradition." | 8You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition." |
| 9He also said to them, "You neatly reject the commandment of God in order to set up your tradition. | 9Then he told them, "You have such a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to keep your own tradition! |
| 10For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.' | 10Because Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever curses his father or mother must certainly be put to death.' |
| 11But you say that if anyone tells his father or mother, 'Whatever help you would have received from me is corban' (that is, a gift for God), | 11But you say, 'If anyone tells his father or mother, "Whatever support you might have received from me is Corban,"' (that is, an offering to God) |
| 12then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother. | 12you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.' |
| 13Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like this." | 13You are destroying the word of God through your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other things like that." |
| 14Then he called the crowd again and said to them, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand. | 14Then he called to the crowd again and told them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand! |
| 15There is nothing outside of a person that can defile him by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles him." | 15Nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean. It's what comes out of a person that makes a person unclean. |

| 17Now when Jesus had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable. | 17When he had left the crowd and gone home, his disciples began asking him about the parable. |
| 18He said to them, "Are you so foolish? Don't you understand that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him? | 18He asked them, "Are you so ignorant? Don't you know that nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean? |
| 19For it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and then goes out into the sewer." (This means all foods are clean.) | 19Because it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then into the sewer, thereby expelling all foods." |
| 20He said, "What comes out of a person defiles him. | 20Then he continued, "It's what comes out of a person that makes a person unclean, |
| 21For from within, out of the human heart, come evil ideas, sexual immorality, theft, murder, | 21because it's from within, from the human heart, that evil thoughts come, as well as sexual immorality, stealing, murder, |
| 22adultery, greed, evil, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly. | 22adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness. |
| 23All these evils come from within and defile a person." | 23All these things come from inside and make a person unclean." |
| 24After Jesus left there, he went to the region of Tyre. When he went into a house, he did not want anyone to know, but he was not able to escape notice. | 24Jesus left that place and went to the territory of Tyre and Sidon. He went into a house, not wanting anyone to know he was there. However, it couldn't be kept a secret. |
| 25Instead, a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him and came and fell at his feet. | 25In fact, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him and came and fell down at his feet. |
| 26The woman was a Greek, of Syrophoenician origin. She asked him to cast the demon out of her daughter. | 26Now the woman happened to be a Greek, born in Phoenicia in Syria. She kept asking him to drive the demon out of her daughter. |
| 27He said to her, "Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and to throw it to the dogs." | 27But he kept telling her, "First let the children be filled. It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the puppies." |
| 28She answered, "Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." | 28But she answered him, "Yes, Lord. Yet even the puppies under the table eat some of the children's crumbs." |
| 29Then he said to her, "Because you said this, you may go. The demon has left your daughter." | 29Then he told her, "Because you have said this, go! The demon has left your daughter." |
| 30She went home and found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. | 30So she went home and found her child lying in bed, and the demon was gone. |
| 31Then Jesus went out again from the region of Tyre and came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee in the region of the Decapolis. | 31Then Jesus left the territory of Tyre and passed through Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the territory of the Decapolis. |
| 32They brought to him a deaf man who had difficulty speaking, and they asked him to place his hands on him. | 32Some people brought him a deaf man who also had a speech impediment. They begged him to lay his hand on him. |
| 33After Jesus took him aside privately, away from the crowd, he put his fingers in the man's ears, and after spitting, he touched his tongue. | 33Jesus took him away from the crowd to be alone with him. Putting his fingers into the man's ears, he touched the man's tongue with saliva. |
| 34Then he looked up to heaven and said with a sigh, "Ephphatha" (that is, "Be opened"). | 34Then he looked up to heaven, sighed, and told him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened!" |
| 35And immediately the man's ears were opened, his tongue loosened, and he spoke plainly. | 35The man's hearing and speech were restored at once, and he began to talk normally. |
| 36Jesus ordered them not to tell anything. But as much as he ordered them not to do this, they proclaimed it all the more. | 36Jesus ordered the people not to tell anyone, but the more he kept ordering them, the more they kept spreading the news. |
| 37People were completely astounded and said, "He has done everything well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak." | 37Amazed beyond measure, they kept on saying, "He does everything well! He even makes deaf people hear and mute people talk!" |
