When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.
They were amazed and astonished, saying, "Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?7Utterly amazed, they asked: "Aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?
"And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?8Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?
"Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,9Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome
Cretans and Arabs-- we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God."11(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"
And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"12Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
But others were mocking and saying, "They are full of sweet wine."13Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."
But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: "Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
"For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day;15These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning!
but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
'AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,' God says, 'THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS;17"'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
EVEN ON MY BONDSLAVES, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT And they shall prophesy.18Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
'AND I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW, BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE.19I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
'THE SUN WILL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD SHALL COME.20The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
'AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.'21And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'
"Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know--22"Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.
this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.23This man was handed over to you by God's deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.
"But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
"For David says of Him, 'I SAW THE LORD ALWAYS IN MY PRESENCE; FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, SO THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN.25David said about him: "'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
'THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXULTED; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE;26Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope,
BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES, NOR ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.27because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay.
'YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF GLADNESS WITH YOUR PRESENCE.'28You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'
"Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.29"Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.
"And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT one OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE,30But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.
he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY.31Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.
"This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.
"Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.33Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
"For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,34For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand
UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET."'35until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'
"Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ-- this Jesus whom you crucified."36"Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah."
Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?"37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
"For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself."39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."
And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation!"40With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."
So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.42They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles.43Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.
And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common;44All the believers were together and had everything in common.
and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.45They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.
Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart,46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
