Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:1From Simeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ, have been granted a faith just as precious as ours.
Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;2May grace and peace be lavished on you as you grow in the rich knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord!
seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.3I can pray this because his divine power has bestowed on us everything necessary for life and godliness through the rich knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence.
For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.4Through these things he has bestowed on us his precious and most magnificent promises, so that by means of what was promised you may become partakers of the divine nature, after escaping the worldly corruption that is produced by evil desire.
Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge,5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith excellence, to excellence, knowledge;
and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness,6to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness;
and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.7to godliness, brotherly affection; to brotherly affection, unselfish love.
For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.8For if these things are really yours and are continually increasing, they will keep you from becoming ineffective and unproductive in your pursuit of knowing our Lord Jesus Christ more intimately.
For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins.9But concerning the one who lacks such things--he is blind. That is to say, he is nearsighted, since he has forgotten about the cleansing of his past sins.
Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;10Therefore, brothers and sisters, make every effort to be sure of your calling and election. For by doing this you will never stumble into sin.
for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.11For thus an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be richly provided for you.
Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you.12Therefore, I intend to remind you constantly of these things even though you know them and are well established in the truth that you now have.
I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder,13Indeed, as long as I am in this tabernacle, I consider it right to stir you up by way of a reminder,
knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.14since I know that my tabernacle will soon be removed, because our Lord Jesus Christ revealed this to me.
And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind.15Indeed, I will also make every effort that, after my departure, you have a testimony of these things.
For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.16For we did not follow cleverly concocted fables when we made known to you the power and return of our Lord Jesus Christ; no, we were eyewitnesses of his grandeur.
For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, "This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased "--17For he received honor and glory from God the Father, when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory: "This is my dear Son, in whom I am delighted."
and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.18When this voice was conveyed from heaven, we ourselves heard it, for we were with him on the holy mountain.
So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.19Moreover, we possess the prophetic word as an altogether reliable thing. You do well if you pay attention to this as you would to a light shining in a murky place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation,20Above all, you do well if you recognize this: No prophecy of scripture ever comes about by the prophet's own imagination,
for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.21for no prophecy was ever borne of human impulse; rather, men carried along by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
