| 1Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: | 1From: Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus, the Messiah. To: Those who have received faith that is as valuable as ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus the Messiah. |
| 2Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; | 2May grace and peace be yours in abundance through full knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord! |
| 3seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. | 3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the full knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence. |
| 4For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. | 4Through these he has given us his precious and wonderful promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, seeing that you have escaped the corruption that is in the world caused by evil desires. |
| 5Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, | 5For this very reason, you must make every effort to supplement your faith with moral character, your moral character with knowledge, |
| 6and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, | 6your knowledge with self-control, your self-control with endurance, your endurance with godliness, |
| 7and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. | 7your godliness with brotherly kindness, and your brotherly kindness with love. |
| 8For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 8For if you possess these qualities, and if they continue to increase among you, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in attaining a full knowledge of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah. |
| 9For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. | 9For the person who lacks these qualities is blind and shortsighted, and has forgotten the cleansing that he has received from his past sins. |
| 10Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; | 10So then, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election certain, for if you keep on doing this you will never fail. |
| 11for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you. | 11For in this way you will be generously granted entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus, the Messiah. |
| 12Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you. | 12Therefore, I intend to keep on reminding you about these things, even though you already know them and are firmly established in the truth that you now have. |
| 13I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, | 13Yet I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I am living in this bodily tent, |
| 14knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. | 14because I know that the removal of my bodily tent will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, has shown me. |
| 15And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind. | 15And I will make every effort to see that you will always remember these things after I am gone. |
| 16For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. | 16When we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, we did not follow any clever myths. Rather, we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. |
| 17For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, "This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased "-- | 17For he received honor and glory from God the Father when these words from the Majestic Glory were spoken about him: "This is my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with him." |
| 18and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. | 18We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain. |
| 19So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. | 19Therefore we regard the message of the prophets as confirmed beyond doubt, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp that is shining in a gloomy place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. |
| 20But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, | 20First of all, you must understand this: No prophecy in Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, |
| 21for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. | 21because no prophecy ever originated through a human decision. Instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. |
