It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples." | 1He was praying in a certain place, and when He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples." |
And He said to them, "When you pray, say: 'Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. | 2He said to them, "Whenever you pray, say: Father, Your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come. |
'Give us each day our daily bread. | 3Give us each day our daily bread. |
'And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.'" | 4And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone in debt to us. And do not bring us into temptation." |
Then He said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; | 5He also said to them: "Suppose one of you has a friend and goes to him at midnight and says to him, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, |
for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; | 6because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I don't have anything to offer him.' |
and from inside he answers and says, 'Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.' | 7Then he will answer from inside and say, Don't bother me! The door is already locked, and my children and I have gone to bed. I can't get up to give you anything.' |
"I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs. | 8I tell you, even though he won't get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his friend's persistence, he will get up and give him as much as he needs. |
"So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. | 9"So I say to you, keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you. |
"For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. | 10For everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. |
"Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? | 11What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish? |
"Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? | 12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? |
"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?" | 13If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?" |
And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute; when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed. | 14Now He was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon came out, the man who had been mute, spoke, and the crowds were amazed. |
But some of them said, "He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons." | 15But some of them said, "He drives out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons!" |
Others, to test Him, were demanding of Him a sign from heaven. | 16And others, as a test, were demanding of Him a sign from heaven. |
But He knew their thoughts and said to them, "Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and a house divided against itself falls. | 17Knowing their thoughts, He told them: "Every kingdom divided against itself is headed for destruction, and a house divided against itself falls. |
"If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. | 18If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say I drive out demons by Beelzebul. |
"And if I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? So they will be your judges. | 19And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, who is it your sons drive them out by? For this reason they will be your judges. |
"But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. | 20If I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you. |
"When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are undisturbed. | 21When a strong man, fully armed, guards his estate, his possessions are secure. |
"But when someone stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away from him all his armor on which he had relied and distributes his plunder. | 22But when one stronger than he attacks and overpowers him, he takes from him all his weapons he trusted in, and divides up his plunder. |
"He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me, scatters. | 23Anyone who is not with Me is against Me, and anyone who does not gather with Me scatters. |
"When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' | 24"When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it roams through waterless places looking for rest, and not finding rest, it then says, I'll go back to my house where I came from.' |
"And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. | 25And returning, it finds the house swept and put in order. |
"Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first." | 26Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that man's last condition is worse than the first." |
While Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, "Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed." | 27As He was saying these things, a woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, "The womb that bore You and the one who nursed You are blessed!" |
But He said, "On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it." | 28He said, "Even more, those who hear the word of God and keep it are blessed!" |
As the crowds were increasing, He began to say, "This generation is a wicked generation; it seeks for a sign, and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah. | 29As the crowds were increasing, He began saying: "This generation is an evil generation. It demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. |
"For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. | 30For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. |
"The Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation at the judgment and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. | 31The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and look--something greater than Solomon is here! |
"The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. | 32The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah's proclamation, and look--something greater than Jonah is here! |
"No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. | 33"No one lights a lamp and puts it in the cellar or under a basket, but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see its light. |
"The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it is bad, your body also is full of darkness. | 34Your eye is the lamp of the body. When your eye is good, your whole body is also full of light. But when it is bad, your body is also full of darkness. |
"Then watch out that the light in you is not darkness. | 35Take care then, that the light in you is not darkness. |
"If therefore your whole body is full of light, with no dark part in it, it will be wholly illumined, as when the lamp illumines you with its rays." | 36If, therefore, your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be entirely illuminated, as when a lamp shines its light on you." |
Now when He had spoken, a Pharisee asked Him to have lunch with him; and He went in, and reclined at the table. | 37As He was speaking, a Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and reclined at the table. |
When the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised that He had not first ceremonially washed before the meal. | 38When the Pharisee saw this, he was amazed that He did not first perform the ritual washing before dinner. |
But the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but inside of you, you are full of robbery and wickedness. | 39But the Lord said to him: "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and evil. |
"You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also? | 40Fools! Didn't He who made the outside make the inside too? |
"But give that which is within as charity, and then all things are clean for you. | 41But give from what is within to the poor, and then everything is clean for you. |
"But woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithe of mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and yet disregard justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. | 42"But woe to you Pharisees! You give a tenth of mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypass justice and love for God. These things you should have done without neglecting the others. |
"Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the chief seats in the synagogues and the respectful greetings in the market places. | 43"Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. |
"Woe to you! For you are like concealed tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it." | 44"Woe to you! You are like unmarked graves; the people who walk over them don't know it." |
One of the lawyers said to Him in reply, "Teacher, when You say this, You insult us too." | 45One of the experts in the law answered Him, "Teacher, when You say these things You insult us too." |
But He said, "Woe to you lawyers as well! For you weigh men down with burdens hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers. | 46Then He said: "Woe also to you experts in the law! You load people with burdens that are hard to carry, yet you yourselves don't touch these burdens with one of your fingers. |
"Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them. | 47"Woe to you! You build monuments to the prophets, and your fathers killed them. |
"So you are witnesses and approve the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs. | 48Therefore, you are witnesses that you approve the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their monuments. |
"For this reason also the wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and some they will persecute, | 49Because of this, the wisdom of God said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,' |
so that the blood of all the prophets, shed since the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, | 50so that this generation may be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world -- |
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged against this generation.' | 51from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. "Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible. |
"Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering." | 52"Woe to you experts in the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge! You didn't go in yourselves, and you hindered those who were going in." |
When He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to question Him closely on many subjects, | 53When He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose Him fiercely and to cross-examine Him about many things; |
plotting against Him to catch Him in something He might say. | 54they were lying in wait for Him to trap Him in something He said. |
