1When the LORD will have compassion on Jacob and again choose Israel, and settle them in their own land, then strangers will join them and attach themselves to the house of Jacob.

1For the LORD will have compassion on Jacob; once again He will choose Israel and settle them in their own land. The foreigner will join them and unite with the house of Jacob.

2The peoples will take them along and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will possess them as an inheritance in the land of the LORD as male servants and female servants; and they will take their captors captive and will rule over their oppressors.

2The nations will escort Israel and bring it to its homeland. Then the house of Israel will possess the nations as menservants and maidservants in the LORD’s land. They will make captives of their captors and rule over their oppressors.

3And it will be in the day when the LORD gives you rest from your pain and turmoil and harsh service in which you have been enslaved,

3On the day that the LORD gives you rest from your pain and torment, and from the hard labor into which you were forced,

4that you will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon, and say, "How the oppressor has ceased, And how fury has ceased!

4you will sing this song of contempt against the king of Babylon: How the oppressor has ceased, and how his fury has ended!

5"The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, The scepter of rulers

5The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers.

6Which used to strike the peoples in fury with unceasing strokes, Which subdued the nations in anger with unrestrained persecution.

6It struck the peoples in anger with unceasing blows; it subdued the nations in rage with relentless persecution.

7"The whole earth is at rest and is quiet; They break forth into shouts of joy.

7All the earth is at peace and at rest; they break out in song.

8"Even the cypress trees rejoice over you, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, 'Since you were laid low, no tree cutter comes up against us.'

8Even the cypresses and cedars of Lebanon exult over you: “Since you have been laid low, no woodcutter comes against us.”

9"Sheol from beneath is excited over you to meet you when you come; It arouses for you the spirits of the dead, all the leaders of the earth; It raises all the kings of the nations from their thrones.

9Sheol beneath is eager to meet you upon your arrival. It stirs the spirits of the dead to greet you—all the rulers of the earth. It makes all the kings of the nations rise from their thrones.

10"They will all respond and say to you, 'Even you have been made weak as we, You have become like us.

10They will all respond to you, saying, “You too have become weak, as we are; you have become like us!”

11Your pomp and the music of your harps Have been brought down to Sheol; Maggots are spread out as your bed beneath you And worms are your covering.'

11Your pomp has been brought down to Sheol, along with the music of your harps. Maggots are your bed and worms your blanket.

12"How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations!

12How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the ground, O destroyer of nations.

13"But you said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north.

13You said in your heart: “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mount of assembly, in the far reaches of the north.

14'I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.'

14I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.”

15"Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol, To the recesses of the pit.

15But you will be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit.

16"Those who see you will gaze at you, They will ponder over you, saying, 'Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms,

16Those who see you will stare; they will ponder your fate: “Is this the man who shook the earth and made the kingdoms tremble,

17Who made the world like a wilderness And overthrew its cities, Who did not allow his prisoners to go home?'

17who turned the world into a desert and destroyed its cities, who refused to let the captives return to their homes?”

18"All the kings of the nations lie in glory, Each in his own tomb.

18All the kings of the nations lie in state, each in his own tomb.

19"But you have been cast out of your tomb Like a rejected branch, Clothed with the slain who are pierced with a sword, Who go down to the stones of the pit Like a trampled corpse.

19But you are cast out of your grave like a rejected branch, covered by those slain with the sword, and dumped into a rocky pit like a carcass trampled underfoot.

20"You will not be united with them in burial, Because you have ruined your country, You have slain your people. May the offspring of evildoers not be mentioned forever.

20You will not join them in burial, since you have destroyed your land and slaughtered your own people. The offspring of the wicked will never again be mentioned.

21"Prepare for his sons a place of slaughter Because of the iniquity of their fathers. They must not arise and take possession of the earth And fill the face of the world with cities."

21Prepare a place to slaughter his sons for the iniquities of their forefathers. They will never rise up to possess a land or cover the earth with their cities.

22"I will rise up against them," declares the LORD of hosts, "and will cut off from Babylon name and survivors, offspring and posterity," declares the LORD.

22“I will rise up against them,” declares the LORD of Hosts. “I will cut off from Babylon her name and her remnant, her offspring and her posterity,” declares the LORD.

23"I will also make it a possession for the hedgehog and swamps of water, and I will sweep it with the broom of destruction," declares the LORD of hosts.

23“I will make her a place for owls and for swamplands; I will sweep her away with the broom of destruction,” declares the LORD of Hosts.

24The LORD of hosts has sworn saying, "Surely, just as I have intended so it has happened, and just as I have planned so it will stand,

24The LORD of Hosts has sworn: “Surely, as I have planned, so will it be; as I have purposed, so will it stand.

25to break Assyria in My land, and I will trample him on My mountains. Then his yoke will be removed from them and his burden removed from their shoulder.

25I will break Assyria in My land; I will trample him on My mountain. His yoke will be taken off My people, and his burden removed from their shoulders.”

26"This is the plan devised against the whole earth; and this is the hand that is stretched out against all the nations.

26This is the plan devised for the whole earth, and this is the hand stretched out over all the nations.

27"For the LORD of hosts has planned, and who can frustrate it? And as for His stretched-out hand, who can turn it back?"

27The LORD of Hosts has purposed, and who can thwart Him? His hand is outstretched, so who can turn it back?

28In the year that King Ahaz died this oracle came:

28In the year that King Ahaz died, this burden was received:

29"Do not rejoice, O Philistia, all of you, Because the rod that struck you is broken; For from the serpent's root a viper will come out, And its fruit will be a flying serpent.

29Do not rejoice, all you Philistines, that the rod that struck you is broken. For a viper will spring from the root of the snake, and a flying serpent from its egg.

30"Those who are most helpless will eat, And the needy will lie down in security; I will destroy your root with famine, And it will kill off your survivors.

30Then the firstborn of the poor will find pasture, and the needy will lie down in safety, but I will kill your root by famine, and your remnant will be slain.

31"Wail, O gate; cry, O city; Melt away, O Philistia, all of you; For smoke comes from the north, And there is no straggler in his ranks.

31Wail, O gate! Cry out, O city! Melt away, all you Philistines! For a cloud of smoke comes from the north, and there are no stragglers in its ranks.

32"How then will one answer the messengers of the nation? That the LORD has founded Zion, And the afflicted of His people will seek refuge in it."

32What answer will be given to the envoys of that nation? “The LORD has founded Zion, where His afflicted people will find refuge.”
