King James Bible | New Living Translation |
But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, | 1But there was a certain man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold some property. |
And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. | 2He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was the full amount. With his wife’s consent, he kept the rest. |
But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? | 3Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. |
Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. | 4The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!” |
And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. | 5As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. Everyone who heard about it was terrified. |
And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. | 6Then some young men got up, wrapped him in a sheet, and took him out and buried him. |
And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. | 7About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. |
And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. | 8Peter asked her, “Was this the price you and your husband received for your land?” “Yes,” she replied, “that was the price.” |
Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. | 9And Peter said, “How could the two of you even think of conspiring to test the Spirit of the Lord like this? The young men who buried your husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you out, too.” |
Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. | 10Instantly, she fell to the floor and died. When the young men came in and saw that she was dead, they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. |
And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things. | 11Great fear gripped the entire church and everyone else who heard what had happened. The Apostles Heal Many |
And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch. | 12The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade. |
And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them. | 13But no one else dared to join them, even though all the people had high regard for them. |
And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.) | 14Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord—crowds of both men and women. |
Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. | 15As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by. |
There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one. | 16Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed. The Apostles Meet Opposition |
Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation, | 17The high priest and his officials, who were Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. |
And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison. | 18They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. |
But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said, | 19But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the jail, and brought them out. Then he told them, |
Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. | 20“Go to the Temple and give the people this message of life!” |
And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. | 21So at daybreak the apostles entered the Temple, as they were told, and immediately began teaching. When the high priest and his officials arrived, they convened the high council —the full assembly of the elders of Israel. Then they sent for the apostles to be brought from the jail for trial. |
But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned, and told, | 22But when the Temple guards went to the jail, the men were gone. So they returned to the council and reported, |
Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within. | 23“The jail was securely locked, with the guards standing outside, but when we opened the gates, no one was there!” |
Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow. | 24When the captain of the Temple guard and the leading priests heard this, they were perplexed, wondering where it would all end. |
Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people. | 25Then someone arrived with startling news: “The men you put in jail are standing in the Temple, teaching the people!” |
Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned. | 26The captain went with his Temple guards and arrested the apostles, but without violence, for they were afraid the people would stone them. |
And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, | 27Then they brought the apostles before the high council, where the high priest confronted them. |
Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. | 28“We gave you strict orders never again to teach in this man’s name!” he said. “Instead, you have filled all Jerusalem with your teaching about him, and you want to make us responsible for his death!” |
Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. | 29But Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than any human authority. |
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. | 30The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead after you killed him by hanging him on a cross. |
Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. | 31Then God put him in the place of honor at his right hand as Prince and Savior. He did this so the people of Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven. |
And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. | 32We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him.” |
When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them. | 33When they heard this, the high council was furious and decided to kill them. |
Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space; | 34But one member, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, who was an expert in religious law and respected by all the people, stood up and ordered that the men be sent outside the council chamber for a while. |
And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men. | 35Then he said to his colleagues, “Men of Israel, take care what you are planning to do to these men! |
For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought. | 36Some time ago there was that fellow Theudas, who pretended to be someone great. About 400 others joined him, but he was killed, and all his followers went their various ways. The whole movement came to nothing. |
After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed. | 37After him, at the time of the census, there was Judas of Galilee. He got people to follow him, but he was killed, too, and all his followers were scattered. |
And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: | 38“So my advice is, leave these men alone. Let them go. If they are planning and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown. |
But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God. | 39But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God!” |
And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. | 40The others accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go. |
And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. | 41The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus. |
And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ. | 42And every day, in the Temple and from house to house, they continued to teach and preach this message: “Jesus is the Messiah.” |
