| 1Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. | 1Summoning the Twelve, He gave them power and authority over all the demons, and power to heal diseases. |
| 2And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. | 2Then He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. |
| 3And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece. | 3"Take nothing for the road," He told them, "no walking stick, no traveling bag, no bread, no money; and don't take an extra shirt. |
| 4And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart. | 4Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there. |
| 5And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them. | 5If they do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them." |
| 6And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where. | 6So they went out and traveled from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere. |

| 10And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. | 10When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus all that they had done. He took them along and withdrew privately to a town called Bethsaida. |
| 11And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing. | 11When the crowds found out, they followed Him. He welcomed them, spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and cured those who needed healing. |
| 12And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place. | 12Late in the day, the Twelve approached and said to Him, "Send the crowd away, so they can go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find food and lodging, because we are in a deserted place here." |
| 13But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people. | 13"You give them something to eat," He told them." We have no more than five loaves and two fish," they said, "unless we go and buy food for all these people." |
| 14For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company. | 14(For about 5,000 men were there.) Then He told His disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about 50 each." |
| 15And they did so, and made them all sit down. | 15They did so, and had them all sit down. |
| 16Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude. | 16Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke them. | 17And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets. | 17Everyone ate and was filled. Then they picked up 12 baskets of leftover pieces. |
| 18And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am? | 18While He was praying in private and His disciples were with Him, He asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?" |
| 19They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. | 19They answered, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back." |
| 20He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. | 20"But you," He asked them, "who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "God's Messiah!" |
| 21And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; | 21But He strictly warned and instructed them to tell this to no one, |
| 22Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. | 22saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day." |
| 23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. | 23Then He said to them all, "If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. |
| 24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. | 24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will save it. |
| 25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? | 25What is a man benefited if he gains the whole world, yet loses or forfeits himself? |
| 26For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels. | 26For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and that of the Father and the holy angels. |
| 27But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God. | 27I tell you the truth: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God." |
| 28And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. | 28About eight days after these words, He took along Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. |
| 29And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. | 29As He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became dazzling white. |
| 30And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: | 30Suddenly, two men were talking with Him--Moses and Elijah. |
| 31Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. | 31They appeared in glory and were speaking of His death, which He was about to accomplish in Jerusalem. |
| 32But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. | 32Peter and those with him were in a deep sleep, and when they became fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who were standing with Him. |
| 33And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. | 33As the two men were departing from Him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it's good for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah"--not knowing what he said. |
| 34While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. | 34While he was saying this, a cloud appeared and overshadowed them. They became afraid as they entered the cloud. |
| 35And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. | 35Then a voice came from the cloud, saying: This is My Son, the Chosen One; listen to Him! |
| 36And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen. | 36After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was found. They kept silent, and in those days told no one what they had seen. |
| 37And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him. | 37The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. |
| 38And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child. | 38Just then a man from the crowd cried out, "Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, because he's my only child. |
| 39And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him. | 39Often a spirit seizes him; suddenly he shrieks, and it throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth; wounding him, it hardly ever leaves him. |
| 40And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not. | 40I begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't." |
| 41And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither. | 41Jesus replied, "You unbelieving and rebellious generation! How long will I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here." |
| 42And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father. | 42As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, cured the boy, and gave him back to his father. |
| 43And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, | 43And they were all astonished at the greatness of God. While everyone was amazed at all the things He was doing, He told His disciples, |
| 44Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. | 44"Let these words sink in: The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men." |
| 45But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying. | 45But they did not understand this statement; it was concealed from them so that they could not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask Him about it. |
| 46Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest. | 46Then an argument started among them about who would be the greatest of them. |
| 47And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him, | 47But Jesus, knowing the thoughts of their hearts, took a little child and had him stand next to Him. |
| 48And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. | 48He told them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in My name welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me welcomes Him who sent Me. For whoever is least among you--this one is great." |
| 49And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. | 49John responded, "Master, we saw someone driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him because he does not follow us." |
| 50And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us. | 50"Don't stop him," Jesus told him, "because whoever is not against you is for you." |
| 51And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, | 51When the days were coming to a close for Him to be taken up, He determined to journey to Jerusalem. |
| 52And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. | 52He sent messengers ahead of Him, and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make preparations for Him. |
| 53And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. | 53But they did not welcome Him, because He determined to journey to Jerusalem. |
| 54And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? | 54When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?" |
| 55But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. | 55But He turned and rebuked them, |
| 56For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village. | 56and they went to another village. |
| 57And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. | 57As they were traveling on the road someone said to Him, "I will follow You wherever You go!" |
| 58And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. | 58Jesus told him, "Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head." |
| 59And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. | 59Then He said to another, "Follow Me."" Lord," he said, "first let me go bury my father." |
| 60Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. | 60But He told him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and spread the news of the kingdom of God." |
| 61And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. | 61Another also said, "I will follow You, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house." |
| 62And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. | 62But Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God." |
