When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.1After Jesus had said these things, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, and He and His disciples went into it.
And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.2Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with His disciples.
Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.3So Judas took a company of soldiers and some temple police from the chief priests and the Pharisees and came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?4Then Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen to Him, went out and said to them, "Who is it you're looking for?""
They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.5Jesus the Nazarene," they answered. "I am He," Jesus told them. Judas, who betrayed Him, was also standing with them.
As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.6When He told them, "I am He," they stepped back and fell to the ground.
Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.7Then He asked them again, "Who is it you're looking for?"" Jesus the Nazarene," they said.
Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:8"I told you I am He," Jesus replied. "So if you're looking for Me, let these men go."
That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.9This was to fulfill the words He had said: "I have not lost one of those You have given Me."
Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear. (The slave's name was Malchus.)
Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?11At that, Jesus said to Peter, "Sheathe your sword! Am I not to drink the cup the Father has given Me?"
Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,12Then the company of soldiers, the commander, and the Jewish temple police arrested Jesus and tied Him up.
And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.13First they led Him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was advantageous that one man should die for the people.
And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.15Meanwhile, Simon Peter was following Jesus, as was another disciple. That disciple was an acquaintance of the high priest; so he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard.
But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.16But Peter remained standing outside by the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the girl who was the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.
Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.17Then the slave girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, "You aren't one of this man's disciples too, are you?"" I am not!" he said.
And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.18Now the slaves and the temple police had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold. They were standing there warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, warming himself.
The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.19The high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and about His teaching.
Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.20"I have spoken openly to the world," Jesus answered him. "I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple complex, where all the Jews congregate, and I haven't spoken anything in secret.
Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.21Why do you question Me? Question those who heard what I told them. Look, they know what I said."
And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?22When He had said these things, one of the temple police standing by slapped Jesus, saying, "Is this the way you answer the high priest?"
Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?23"If I have spoken wrongly," Jesus answered him, "give evidence about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you hit Me?"
Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.24Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, "You aren't one of His disciples too, are you?" He denied it and said, "I am not!"
One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?26One of the high priest's slaves, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you with Him in the garden?"
Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.27Peter then denied it again. Immediately a rooster crowed.
Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.28Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters themselves; otherwise they would be defiled and unable to eat the Passover.
Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?29Then Pilate came out to them and said, "What charge do you bring against this man?"
They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.30They answered him, "If this man weren't a criminal, we wouldn't have handed Him over to you."
Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:31So Pilate told them, "Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your law."" It's not legal for us to put anyone to death," the Jews declared.
That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.32They said this so that Jesus' words might be fulfilled signifying what kind of death He was going to die.
Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?33Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?"
Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?34Jesus answered, "Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about Me?""
Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?35I'm not a Jew, am I?" Pilate replied. "Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?"
Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.36"My kingdom is not of this world," said Jesus. "If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I wouldn't be handed over to the Jews. As it is, My kingdom does not have its origin here." "
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.37You are a king then?" Pilate asked. "You say that I'm a king," Jesus replied. "I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.""
Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.38What is truth?" said Pilate. After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, "I find no grounds for charging Him.
But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?39You have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"
Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.40They shouted back, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.
