Psalm 17
International Standard VersionEnglish Standard Version
LORD, hear my just plea! Pay attention to my cry! Listen to my prayer, since it does not come from lying lips.1Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit!
Justice for me will come from your presence; your eyes see what is right.2From your presence let my vindication come! Let your eyes behold the right!
When you probe my heart, and examine me at night; when you refine me, you will find nothing wrong, for I have determined that I will not transgress with my mouth.3You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.
As for the ways of mankind, I have, according to the words of your lips, avoided the ways of the violent.4With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent.
Because my steps have held fast to your paths, my footsteps have not faltered.5My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped.
I call upon you, for you will answer me, God. Listen closely to me and hear my prayer.6I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words.
Show forth your gracious love, save those who take refuge in you from those who rebel against your sovereign power. 7Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.
Protect me as the most precious part of the eye; hide me under the shadow of your wings8Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,
from the wicked who have afflicted me, from my enemies who have surrounded me.9from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me.
They are imprisoned by their own prosperity, they have boasted proudly with their mouth.10They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths they speak arrogantly.
Now they have encircled our paths and are determined to cast us down to the ground.11They have now surrounded our steps; they set their eyes to cast us to the ground.
Like a lion they desire to rip us to pieces, like a young lion waiting in ambush.12He is like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion lurking in ambush.
Arise, LORD, confront them, bring them to their knees! Deliver me from the wicked by your sword—13Arise, O LORD! Confront him, subdue him! Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword,
from men, LORD, by your hand— from men who belong to this world, whose reward is only in this life. But as for your treasured ones, may their stomachs be full, may their children have an abundance, and may they leave wealth to their offspring.14from men by your hand, O LORD, from men of the world whose portion is in this life. You fill their womb with treasure; they are satisfied with children, and they leave their abundance to their infants.
But as for me, justified, I will behold your face; when I awake, your presence will satisfy me.15As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness.
