God blessed Noah and his sons and ordered them, "Be productive, multiply, and fill the earth. 1God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
All the living creatures of the earth will be filled with fear and terror of you from now on, including all the creatures that fly in the sky, everything that crawls on the ground, and all the fish of the ocean. They've been assigned to live under your dominion. 2The fear and terror of you will be in every living creature on the earth, every bird of the sky, every creature that crawls on the ground, and all the fish of the sea. They are placed under your authority.
"Every living, moving creature will be food for you. Just as I gave you green plants before, so now you have everything. 3Every creature that lives and moves will be food for you; as I gave the green plants, I have given you everything.
However, you are not to eat meat with its life—that is, its blood—in it! 4However, you must not eat meat with its lifeblood in it.
Also, I will certainly demand an accounting regarding bloodshed, from every animal and from every human being. I'll demand an accounting from every human being for the life of another human being.5And I will require a penalty for your lifeblood; I will require it from any animal and from any human; if someone murders a fellow human, I will require that person's life.
"Whoever sheds human blood, by a human his own blood is to be shed; because God made human beings in his own image.6Whoever sheds human blood, by humans his blood will be shed, for God made humans in his image.
Now as for you, be productive and multiply; spread out over the land and multiply throughout it."7But you, be fruitful and multiply; spread out over the earth and multiply on it."
Later, God told Noah and his sons, 8Then God said to Noah and his sons with him,
"Pay attention! I'm establishing my covenant with you and with your descendants after you, 9"Understand that I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you,
and with every living creature that is with you—the flying creatures, the livestock, and all the wildlife of the earth that are with you—all the earth's animals that came out of the ark. 10and with every living creature that is with you--birds, livestock, and all wildlife of the earth that are with you--all the animals of the earth that came out of the ark.
I will establish my covenant with you: No living beings will ever be cut off again by flood waters, and there will never again be a flood that destroys the earth."11I establish my covenant with you that never again will every creature be wiped out by floodwaters; there will never again be a flood to destroy the earth."
God also said, "Here's the symbol that represents the covenant that I'm making between me and you and every living being with you, for all future generations: 12And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all future generations:
I've set my rainbow in the sky to symbolize the covenant between me and the earth. 13I have placed my bow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow becomes visible in the clouds, 14Whenever I form clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds,
I'll remember my covenant between me and you and every living creature, so that water will never again become a flood to destroy all living beings. 15I will remember my covenant between me and you and all the living creatures: water will never again become a flood to destroy every creature.
When the rainbow is in the clouds, I will observe it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living beings on the earth."16The bow will be in the clouds, and I will look at it and remember the permanent covenant between God and all the living creatures on earth."
God also told Noah, "This is the symbol of the covenant that I've established between me and everything that lives on the earth."17God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and every creature on earth."
Noah's sons who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Ham later fathered Canaan.) 18Noah's sons who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan.
These three were Noah's sons, and from these men the whole earth was repopulated.19These three were Noah's sons, and from them the whole earth was populated.
Noah, a man of the soil, was the first to plant and farm a vineyard. 20Noah, as a man of the soil, began by planting a vineyard.
He drank some of the wine, got drunk, and lay down naked right in the middle of his tent. 21He drank some of the wine, became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent.
Ham, who fathered Canaan, saw his father's genitals and told his two brothers outside. 22Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside.
Then Shem and Japheth took their father's cloak, laid it across both their shoulders, and walking backwards, they both covered their father's genitals. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father's genitals. 23Then Shem and Japheth took a cloak and placed it over both their shoulders, and walking backward, they covered their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father naked.
When Noah sobered up and learned what his youngest son had done to him, 24When Noah awoke from his drinking and learned what his youngest son had done to him,
he said, "Canaan is cursed! He will be the lowest of slaves to his relatives."25he said: Canaan is cursed. He will be the lowest of slaves to his brothers.
He also said, "Blessed be the LORD God of Shem, and may Canaan be his slave.26He also said: Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem; Let Canaan be Shem's slave.
May God make room for Japheth; may God live in Shem's tents, and may Canaan serve him."27Let God extend Japheth; let Japheth dwell in the tents of Shem; let Canaan be Shem's slave.
Noah lived 350 years after the flood. 28Now Noah lived 350 years after the flood.
After Noah had lived a total of 950 years, he died.29So Noah's life lasted 950 years; then he died.
