When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.1Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.2Suddenly a sound like a violent wind blowing came from heaven and filled the entire house where they were sitting.
And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.3And tongues spreading out like a fire appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.
Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven residing in Jerusalem.
And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.6When this sound occurred, a crowd gathered and was in confusion, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?7Completely baffled, they said, "Aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?
And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?8And how is it that each one of us hears them in our own native language?
Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and the province of Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,
both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”11both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs--we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great deeds God has done!"
And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”12All were astounded and greatly confused, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"
But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”13But others jeered at the speakers, saying, "They are drunk on new wine!"
But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.14But Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them: "You men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, know this and listen carefully to what I say.
For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.15In spite of what you think, these men are not drunk, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning.
But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:16But this is what was spoken about through the prophet Joel:
“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;17And in the last days it will be,' God says, 'that I will pour out my Spirit on all people, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.18Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;19And I will perform wonders in the sky above and miraculous signs on the earth below, blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.20The sun will be changed to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’21And then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—22"Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds, wonders, and miraculous signs that God performed among you through him, just as you yourselves know--
this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.23this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles.
God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.24But God raised him up, having released him from the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held in its power.
For David says concerning him, “‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;25For David says about him, 'I saw the Lord always in front of me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken.
therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope.26Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced; my body also will live in hope,
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.27because you will not leave my soul in Hades, nor permit your Holy One to experience decay.
You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’28You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of joy with your presence.'
“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.29"Brothers, I can speak confidently to you about our forefather David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,30So then, because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne,
he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.31David by foreseeing this spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did his body experience decay.
This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.32This Jesus God raised up, and we are all witnesses of it.
Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.33So then, exalted to the right hand of God, and having received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, he has poured out what you both see and hear.
For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,34For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says, 'The Lord said to my lord, "Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.”’35until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'
Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”36Therefore let all the house of Israel know beyond a doubt that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Christ."
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”37Now when they heard this, they were acutely distressed and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "What should we do, brothers?"
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.38Peter said to them, "Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”39For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself."
And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”40With many other words he testified and exhorted them saying, "Save yourselves from this perverse generation!"
So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.41So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added.
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.42They were devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.43Reverential awe came over everyone, and many wonders and miraculous signs came about by the apostles.
And all who believed were together and had all things in common.44All who believed were together and held everything in common,
And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.45and they began selling their property and possessions and distributing the proceeds to everyone, as anyone had need.
And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,46Every day they continued to gather together by common consent in the temple courts, breaking bread from house to house, sharing their food with glad and humble hearts,
praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.47praising God and having the good will of all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number every day those who were being saved.
