Now when the king lived in his house and the LORD had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies,1When the king had settled into his palace and the LORD had given him rest on every side from all his enemies,
the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.”2the king said to Nathan the prophet, "Look, I am living in a cedar house while the ark of God sits inside tent curtains."
And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.”3So Nathan told the king, "Go and do all that is on your heart, for the LORD is with you."
But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan,4But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan: "
“Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Would you build me a house to dwell in?5Go to My servant David and say, 'This is what the LORD says: Are you to build a house for Me to live in?
I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling.6From the time I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until today I have not lived in a house; instead, I have been moving around with a tent as My dwelling.
In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’7In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked anyone among the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel: Why haven't you built Me a house of cedar?'"
Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel.8Now this is what you are to say to My servant David: 'This is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture and from following the sheep to be ruler over My people Israel.
And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth.9I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. I will make a name for you like that of the greatest in the land.
And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly,10I will establish a place for My people Israel and plant them, so that they may live there and not be disturbed again. Evildoers will not afflict them as they have done
from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house.11ever since the day I ordered judges to be over My people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies." The LORD declares to you: The LORD Himself will make a house for you.
When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.12When your time comes and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.13He will build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,14I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to Me. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a human rod and with blows from others.
but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.15But My faithful love will never leave him as I removed it from Saul; I removed him from your way.
And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’”16Your house and kingdom will endure before Me forever, and your throne will be established forever.'"
In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.17Nathan spoke all these words and this entire vision to David.
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?18Then King David went in, sat in the LORD's presence, and said, Who am I, Lord GOD, and what is my house that You have brought me this far?
And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord GOD. You have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord GOD!19What You have done so far was a little thing to You, Lord GOD, for You have also spoken about Your servant's house in the distant future. And this is a revelation for mankind, Lord GOD.
And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord GOD!20What more can David say to You? You know Your servant, Lord GOD.
Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it.21Because of Your word and according to Your will, You have revealed all these great things to Your servant.
Therefore you are great, O LORD God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.22This is why You are great, Lord GOD. There is no one like You, and there is no God besides You, as all we have heard confirms.
And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name and doing for them great and awesome things by driving out before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods?23And who is like Your people Israel? God came to one nation on earth in order to redeem a people for Himself, to make a name for Himself, and to perform for them great and awesome acts, driving out nations and their gods before Your people You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt.
And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O LORD, became their God.24You established Your people Israel to be Your own people forever, and You, LORD, have become their God.
And now, O LORD God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken.25Now, LORD God, fulfill the promise forever that You have made to Your servant and his house. Do as You have promised,
And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you.26so that Your name will be exalted forever, when it is said, "The LORD of Hosts is God over Israel." The house of Your servant David will be established before You
For you, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you.27since You, LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant when You said, "I will build a house for you." Therefore, Your servant has found the courage to pray this prayer to You.
And now, O Lord GOD, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.28Lord GOD, You are God; Your words are true, and You have promised this grace to Your servant.
Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord GOD, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.”29Now, please bless Your servant's house so that it will continue before You forever. For You, Lord GOD, have spoken, and with Your blessing Your servant's house will be blessed forever.
