God, we have heard with our ears--our ancestors have told us--the work you accomplished in their days, in days long ago: | 1For the music director; by the Korahites, a well-written song. O God, we have clearly heard; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in ancient times. |
In order to plant them, you displaced the nations by your hand; in order to settle them, you brought disaster on the peoples. | 2You, by your power, defeated nations and settled our fathers on their land; you crushed the people living there and enabled our ancestors to occupy it. |
For they did not take the land by their sword--their arm did not bring them victory--but by your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, because you were favorable toward them. | 3For they did not conquer the land by their swords, and they did not prevail by their strength, but rather by your power, strength and good favor, for you were partial to them. |
You are my King, my God, who ordains victories for Jacob. | 4You are my king, O God! Decree Jacob's deliverance! |
Through you we drive back our foes; through your name we trample our enemies. | 5By your power we will drive back our enemies; by your strength we will trample down our foes! |
For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not bring me victory. | 6For I do not trust in my bow, and I do not prevail by my sword. |
But you give us victory over our foes and let those who hate us be disgraced. | 7For you deliver us from our enemies; you humiliate those who hate us. |
We boast in God all day long; we will praise your name forever. Selah | 8In God I boast all day long, and we will continually give thanks to your name. (Selah) |
But you have rejected and humiliated us; you do not march out with our armies. | 9But you rejected and embarrassed us! You did not go into battle with our armies. |
You make us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves. | 10You made us retreat from the enemy. Those who hate us take whatever they want from us. |
You hand us over to be eaten like sheep and scatter us among the nations. | 11You handed us over like sheep to be eaten; you scattered us among the nations. |
You sell your people for nothing; you make no profit from selling them. | 12You sold your people for a pittance; you did not ask a high price for them. |
You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us. | 13You made us an object of disdain to our neighbors; those who live on our borders taunt and insult us. |
You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. | 14You made us an object of ridicule among the nations; foreigners treat us with contempt. |
My disgrace is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face, | 15All day long I feel humiliated and am overwhelmed with shame, |
because of the taunts of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy and avenger. | 16before the vindictive enemy who ridicules and insults me. |
All this has happened to us, but we have not forgotten you or betrayed your covenant. | 17All this has happened to us, even though we have not rejected you or violated your covenant with us. |
Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from your path. | 18We have not been unfaithful, nor have we disobeyed your commands. |
But you have crushed us in a haunt of jackals and have covered us with deepest darkness. | 19Yet you have battered us, leaving us a heap of ruins overrun by wild dogs; you have covered us with darkness. |
If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our hands to a foreign god, | 20If we had rejected our God, and spread out our hands in prayer to another god, |
wouldn't God have found this out, since he knows the secrets of the heart? | 21would not God discover it, for he knows one's thoughts? |
Because of you we are being put to death all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. | 22Yet because of you we are killed all day long; we are treated like sheep at the slaughtering block. |
Wake up, LORD! Why are you sleeping? Get up! Don't reject us forever! | 23Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Wake up! Do not reject us forever! |
Why do you hide and forget our affliction and oppression? | 24Why do you look the other way, and ignore the way we are oppressed and mistreated? |
For we have sunk down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. | 25For we lie in the dirt, with our bellies pressed to the ground. |
Rise up! Help us! Redeem us because of your faithful love. | 26Rise up and help us! Rescue us because of your loyal love! |
