God, we have heard with our ears--our ancestors have told us--the work you accomplished in their days, in days long ago: | 1To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil. We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old. |
In order to plant them, you displaced the nations by your hand; in order to settle them, you brought disaster on the peoples. | 2How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out. |
For they did not take the land by their sword--their arm did not bring them victory--but by your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, because you were favorable toward them. | 3For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them. |
You are my King, my God, who ordains victories for Jacob. | 4Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob. |
Through you we drive back our foes; through your name we trample our enemies. | 5Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. |
For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not bring me victory. | 6For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. |
But you give us victory over our foes and let those who hate us be disgraced. | 7But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us. |
We boast in God all day long; we will praise your name forever. Selah | 8In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah. |
But you have rejected and humiliated us; you do not march out with our armies. | 9But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies. |
You make us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves. | 10Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves. |
You hand us over to be eaten like sheep and scatter us among the nations. | 11Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen. |
You sell your people for nothing; you make no profit from selling them. | 12Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price. |
You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us. | 13Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us. |
You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. | 14Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people. |
My disgrace is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face, | 15My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me, |
because of the taunts of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy and avenger. | 16For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger. |
All this has happened to us, but we have not forgotten you or betrayed your covenant. | 17All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant. |
Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from your path. | 18Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way; |
But you have crushed us in a haunt of jackals and have covered us with deepest darkness. | 19Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death. |
If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our hands to a foreign god, | 20If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god; |
wouldn't God have found this out, since he knows the secrets of the heart? | 21Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. |
Because of you we are being put to death all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. | 22Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. |
Wake up, LORD! Why are you sleeping? Get up! Don't reject us forever! | 23Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever. |
Why do you hide and forget our affliction and oppression? | 24Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression? |
For we have sunk down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. | 25For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth. |
Rise up! Help us! Redeem us because of your faithful love. | 26Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake. |
