When the uproar had ended, Paul sent for the disciples. And after encouraging them, he said goodbye to them and left for Macedonia.1When the uproar was over, Paul sent for the disciples and encouraged them. Then he said goodbye to them and left to go to Macedonia.
After traveling through that area and speaking many words of encouragement, he arrived in Greece,2He went through those regions and encouraged the people with everything he had to say. Then he went to Greece
where he stayed three months. And when the Jews formed a plot against him as he was about to sail for Syria, he decided to go back through Macedonia.3and stayed there for three months. When he was about to sail for Syria, a plot was initiated against him by the Jews, so he decided to go back through Macedonia.
Paul was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from the province of Asia.4He was accompanied by Sopater (the son of Pyrrhus) from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia.
These men went on ahead and waited for us in Troas.5These men went on ahead and were waiting for us in Troas.
And after the Feast of Unleavened Bread, we sailed from Philippi, and five days later we rejoined them in Troas, where we stayed seven days.6After the Festival of Unleavened Bread, we sailed from Philippi, and days later we joined them in Troas and stayed there for seven days.
On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Since Paul was ready to leave the next day, he talked to them and kept on speaking until midnight.7On the first day of the week, when we had met to break bread, Paul began to address the people. Since he intended to leave the next day, he went on speaking until midnight.
Now there were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered.8Now there were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting.
And a certain young man named Eutychus, seated in the window, was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell from the third story and was picked up dead.9A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in a window, began to sink off into a deep sleep as Paul kept speaking longer and longer. Overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third floor and was picked up dead.
But Paul went down, threw himself on the young man, and embraced him. “Do not be alarmed!” he said. “He is still alive!”10But Paul went down, bent over him, took him into his arms, and said, "Stop being alarmed, because he's still alive."
Then Paul went back upstairs, broke bread, and ate. And after speaking until daybreak, he departed.11Then he went back upstairs, broke bread, and ate. He talked with them for a long time, until dawn, and then left.
And the people were greatly relieved to take the boy home alive.12They took the young man away alive and were greatly relieved.
We went on ahead to the ship and sailed to Assos, where we were to take Paul aboard. He had arranged this because he was going there on foot.13We proceeded to the ship and sailed for Assos, where we intended to pick up Paul. He had arranged it this way, since he had planned to travel there on foot.
And when he met us at Assos, we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene.14When he met us in Assos, we took him on board and went to Mitylene.
Sailing on from there, we arrived the next day opposite Chios. The day after that we arrived at Samos, and on the following day we came to Miletus.15We sailed from there and on the following day arrived off Chios. The next day, we crossed over to Samos and stayed at Trogyllium. The day after that, we came to Miletus.
Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid spending time in the province of Asia, because he was in a hurry to reach Jerusalem, if possible, by the day of Pentecost.16Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid spending time in Asia, as he was in a hurry to get to Jerusalem for the day of Pentecost, if that was possible.
From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church.17From Miletus he sent messengers to Ephesus to ask the elders of the church to meet with him.
When they came to him, he said, “You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I arrived in the province of Asia.18When they came to him, he told them, "You know how I lived among you the entire time from the first day I set foot in Asia.
I served the Lord with great humility and with tears, especially in the trials that came upon me through the plots of the Jews.19I served the Lord with all humility, with tears, and with trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews.
I did not shrink back from declaring anything that was helpful to you as I taught you publicly and from house to house,20I never shrank from telling you anything that would help you nor from teaching you publicly and from house to house.
testifying to Jews and Greeks alike about repentance to God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.21I testified to both Jews and Greeks about repentance to God and faith in our Lord Jesus.
And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there.22And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there,
I only know that in town after town the Holy Spirit warns me that chains and afflictions await me.23except that in town after town the Holy Spirit assures me that imprisonment and suffering are waiting for me.
But I consider my life of no value to me, if only I may finish my course and complete the ministry I have received from the Lord Jesus—the ministry of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.24But I don't place any value on my life, if only I can finish my race and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.
Now I know that none of you among whom I have preached the kingdom will see my face again.25"Now I know that none of you among whom I traveled preaching about the kingdom will ever see my face again.
Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men.26I therefore declare to you today that I'm not responsible for the blood of any of you,
For I did not shrink back from declaring to you the whole will of God.27because I never shrank from telling you the whole plan of God.
Keep watch over yourselves and the entire flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.28Pay attention to yourselves and to the entire flock over which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to be shepherds of God's church, which he acquired with his own blood.
I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.29I know that when I'm gone, savage wolves will come among you and not spare the flock.
Even from your own number, men will rise up and distort the truth to draw away disciples after them.30Indeed, some of your own men will arise and distort the truth in order to lure the disciples into following them.
Therefore be alert and remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.31So be alert! Remember that for three years, night and day, I never stopped tearfully warning each of you.
And now I commit you to God and to the word of His grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all who are sanctified.32"I'm now entrusting you to God and to the message of his grace, which is able to build you up and secure for you an inheritance among all who are sanctified.
I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.33I never desired anyone's silver, gold, or clothes.
You yourselves know that these hands of mine have ministered to my own needs and those of my companions.34You yourselves know that I worked with my own hands to support myself and those who were with me.
In everything, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus Himself: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”35In every way I showed you that by working hard like this we should help the weak and remember the words that the Lord Jesus himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"
When Paul had said this, he knelt down with all of them and prayed.36When Paul had said this, he knelt down and prayed with all of them.
They all wept openly as they embraced Paul and kissed him.37All of them cried and cried as they put their arms around Paul and kissed him affectionately.
They were especially grieved by his statement that they would never see his face again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.38They were especially sorrowful because of what he had said—that they would never see his face again. Then they took him to the ship.
