Berean Study BibleEnglish Standard Version
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.1When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.2And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.3And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.5Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.
And when this sound rang out, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking his own language.6And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.
Astounded and amazed, they asked, “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?7And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
How is it then that each of us hears them in his own native language?8And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?
Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,9Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome,10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,
both Jews and converts to Judaism; Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”11both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”
Astounded and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”12And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
But others mocked them and said, “They are drunk on new wine!”13But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, lifted up his voice, and addressed the crowd: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen carefully to my words.14But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.
These men are not drunk as you suppose. It is only the third hour of the day!15For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.
No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:16But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:
’In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.17“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;
Even on My menservants and maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.18even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.19And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
The sun will be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and glorious Day of the Lord.20the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’21And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
Men of Israel, listen to this message: Jesus of Nazareth was a man certified by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs, which God did among you through Him, as you yourselves know.22“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—
He was delivered up by God’s set plan and foreknowledge, and you, by the hands of the lawless, put Him to death by nailing Him to the cross.23this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for Him to be held in its clutches.24God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
David says about Him: ’I saw the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.25For David says concerning him, “‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will dwell in hope,26therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope.
because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay.27For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.
You have made known to me the paths of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence.’28You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’
Brothers, I can tell you with confidence that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.29“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that He would place one of his descendants on his throne.30Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,
Foreseeing this, David spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did His body see decay.31he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.
God has raised this Jesus to life, to which we are all witnesses.32This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
Exalted, then, to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.33Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says: ’The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand,34For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’35until I make your enemies your footstool.”’
Therefore let all Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ!”36Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”37Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.38And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
This promise belongs to you and your children and to all who are far off—to all whom the Lord our God will call to Himself.”39For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
With many other words he testified, and he urged them, “Be saved from this corrupt generation.”40And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”
Those who embraced his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to the believers that day.41So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.42And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
A sense of awe came over everyone, and the apostles performed many wonders and signs.43And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.
All the believers were together and had everything in common.44And all who believed were together and had all things in common.
Selling their possessions and goods, they shared with anyone who was in need.45And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
With one accord they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart,46And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,
praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.47praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
