The Beginning

(Genesis 1:1-2)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2He was with God in the beginning.2He was in the beginning with God.2He was in the beginning with God.2The same was in the beginning with God.2He was with God in the beginning.
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.3All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.3All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.3All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created.
4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.4In him was life, and the life was the light of men.4In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.4In him was life; and the life was the light of men.4Life was in Him, and that life was the light of men.
5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.5The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.5That light shines in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome it.

The Witness of John

(Malachi 3:1-5)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
6There was a man sent from God whose name was John.6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.6There came a man sent from God, whose name was John.6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.6There was a man named John who was sent from God.
7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.7He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him.7He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him.7The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.7He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.
8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.8He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.8He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.8He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.
9The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.9The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.9There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.9That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.9The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.10He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.10He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.10He was in the world, and the world was created through Him, yet the world did not recognize Him.
11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.11He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.11He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.11He came unto his own, and his own received him not.11He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him.
12Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--12But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,12But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:12But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name,
13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.13who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.13who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.13who were born, not of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.

The Word Made His Dwelling among Us

(Psalm 84:1-12)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.14And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.14The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15(John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, "This is the one I spoke about when I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'")15(John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”)15John testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'"15John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.15(John testified concerning Him and exclaimed," This was the One of whom I said, The One coming after me has surpassed me, because He existed before me.'")
16Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.16For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.16For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.16And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.16Indeed, we have all received grace after grace from His fullness,
17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.17For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.17For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.17for the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.18No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.18No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.18No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.18No one has ever seen God. The One and Only Son-- the One who is at the Father's side-- He has revealed Him.

The Mission of John the Baptist

(Isaiah 40:1-5; Matthew 3:1-12; Mark 1:1-8; Luke 3:1-20)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
19Now this was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.19And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”19This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"19And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?19This is John's testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, "Who are you?"
20He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Messiah."20He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”20And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ."20And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.20He did not refuse to answer, but he declared: "I am not the Messiah.""
21They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."21And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”21They asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No."21And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.21What then?" they asked him. "Are you Elijah?"" I am not," he said." Are you the Prophet?"" No," he answered."
22Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"22So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”22Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"22Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?22Who are you, then?" they asked. "We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself?"
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
23John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.'"23He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”23He said, "I am A VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE LORD,' as Isaiah the prophet said."23He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.23He said, "I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord--just as Isaiah the prophet said."
24Now the Pharisees who had been sent24(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.24And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.
25questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"25They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”25They asked him, and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"25And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?25So they asked him, "Why then do you baptize if you aren't the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?""
26"I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know.26John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know,26John answered them saying, "I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.26John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;26I baptize with water," John answered them. "Someone stands among you, but you don't know Him.
27He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."27even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”27"It is He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."27He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.27He is the One coming after me, whose sandal strap I'm not worthy to untie."
28This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.28These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.28These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.28These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.28All this happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Behold, the Lamb of God

(Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!29The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!29The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'30This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’30"This is He on behalf of whom I said, 'After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'30This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.30This is the One I told you about: 'After me comes a man who has surpassed me, because He existed before me.'
31I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel."31I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”31"I did not recognize Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in water."31And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.31I didn't know Him, but I came baptizing with water so He might be revealed to Israel."
32Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.32And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.32John testified saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.32And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.32And John testified, "I watched the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He rested on Him.
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
33And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'33I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’33"I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, 'He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.'33And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.33I didn't know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The One you see the Spirit descending and resting on--He is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
34I have seen and I testify that this is God's Chosen One."34And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”34"I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God."34And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.34I have seen and testified that He is the Son of God!"

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

(Matthew 4:18-22; Matthew 13:47-52; Mark 1:16-20; Luke 5:1-11)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
35The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.35The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,35Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples,35Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;35Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples.
36When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"36and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”36and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"36And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!36When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look! The Lamb of God!"
37When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.37The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.37The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus.
38Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means "Teacher"), "where are you staying?"38Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?”38And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, "What do you seek?" They said to Him, "Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?"38Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?38When Jesus turned and noticed them following Him, He asked them, "What are you looking for?" They said to Him, "Rabbi" (which means "Teacher"), "where are You staying?"
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
39"Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.39He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.39He said to them, "Come, and you will see." So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.39He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.39"Come and you'll see," He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day. It was about 10 in the morning.
40Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.40One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.40One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.40One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.40Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Him.
41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ).41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).41He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah " (which translated means Christ).41He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.41He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which means "Anointed One"),
42And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter).42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas " (which is translated Peter).42And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.42and he brought Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, He said, "You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which means "Rock").

44Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.44Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.
45Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote-- Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."45Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.45Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth!""
46"Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip.46Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”46Nathanael said to him, "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."46And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.46Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Nathanael asked him." Come and see," Philip answered.
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
47When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit."47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!"47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!47Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said about him, "Here is a true Israelite; no deceit is in him.""
48"How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."48Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”48Nathanael said to Him, "How do You know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."48Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.48How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you," Jesus answered."
49Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel."49Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”49Nathanael answered Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel."49Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.49Rabbi," Nathanael replied, "You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"
50Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that."50Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”50Jesus answered and said to him, "Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these."50Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.50Jesus responded to him, "Do you believe only because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this."
51He then added, "Very truly I tell you, you will see 'heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on' the Son of Man."51And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”51And He said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."51And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.51Then He said, "I assure you: You will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
